Learn to speak Southern English. Use "y'all" in daily speech.

O god sometimes I do actually say that. Living in Texas will do that to you.

well, vous etes is plural, tu es is singular.

You probably already knew that, though.

Yes but isn't vous etes also singular? In a formal situation? I don't know. I'm confused.

Yes.

Sounds like you get it but you don't think you do.

I think what he doesn't think he gets is that French (like German and Japanese and unlike English) has a familial address and a formal address.

Familial versus formal is another permutation of language like person, number and case.

Yeah true, "vous" is also singular if you're addressing someone you don't know, or someone in a position of power, or as a show of respect.

A lot of Romance languages use the same word twice in different conjugations.

You need to break the English habit of trying to fish up each appropriate word one by one and learn the Romance habit of memorizing the entire conjugation table (the same spelling will sometimes appear twice, but you memorize each verb form as part of a set). I think that is your problem.

It's time-consuming and unfun, to be sure. But in the long run, this will also improve your English skills because you will better recognize the mechanics of our own language.

On a related note, is there an equivalent in French to Usted in Spanish or is vous form a catch-all for Usted(es) and vosotros? Piqued my interest.
