I realize this has been around for a while....
Can someone please explain what's going on here.
I literally don't get it. After having looked up the English translation, I still don't understand this video. I think I understand Asian cultures the least of all.
Plz explain k thx.
Edit: Apparently the chick in the video at the end is named "Kim Hyuna" and she's some sort of pop star. I would have really wild and kinky sex with her if given the opportunity.

It's just some Korean vocalists singing/rapping to a catchy beat with a fun music video. The video doesn't need to parrot what's being sung in the lyrics, and the lyrics don't need to make any sense.
Can't remember if this article has anything from Psy, but in other interviews he pretty much confirms 100% of this.
tl;dr, he's making fun of the ridiculous attempts at opulence in gangnam, a super posh neighborhood in soule, specifically Doenjangnyeo, or "soybean paste women" - who are willing to live off fcking cheap ramen in order to walk around with a 10 dollar coffee.

That was a really interesting read - thanks for the help googling
I had no idea South Korea was so fucked up. The line you always get in America is "see how much better South Korea is than communist North Korea? They are a shining example of the virtues of capitalism!"
While the standard of living in South Korea is certainly better, it's just interesting to realize how many capitalistic problems they have - credit card debt, consumerism, vanity. Props to this guy for commenting on it, albeit in a very subtle way that is tough for those in our culture to pick up on.
I think I've linked this before but feel compelled to link it again. Amazing. I love watching that.
Anyway, Azelma, it's not that simple. This is the Anna Karenina principle in action.
North and South Korea are both Korean first and foremost. What we see from across the ocean is merely how the Korean culture imprints itself on their imported social models. Take the subordinate role of women, the unnecessary brutality that underscores every aspect of life, the intense need of Koreans to seek social validation through conformity, institutional approval and rigorous choreography. Those constants hold true across both Koreas.
Compare the ways of North and South Korea to East and West Germany, or China and Hong Kong, or the states of the EU. No other Communist state has evolved anything like the Kim family, but other Communist states have developed similar culturally unique variations on the Communist model - for example, the Chinese Communist model is based on loyalty and mentorship, in true Chinese form. The Russian model reflected the intense need of Russians for a strong tyrant - this is why they love Putin but hated Gorbachev and Khrushchev.
The Koreans are a formidable and disciplined people. They have strong family values and see their nation as an extended family. Their culture also has a deep vicious streak, a predisposition for sadism, bigotry, and depravity, and a lack of individual courage.
Watching the North and South alike one sees those basic cultural characteristics played out in different ways.
Oh, and did you ever get around to the 'light reading'?

This.

South Korea is even more messed up than North Korea imo. They have a lot of really serious social problems.

All problems that exist here but are much worse there. I remain convinced that China and the US (and other nations that follow their models) will fail for social reasons and the EU and India will rule the second half of this century.
