By the year 2030, for the first time in history, a majority of the world's population will be out of poverty. Middle classes will be the most important social and economic sector. Asia will enjoy the global power status it last had in the Middle Ages, while the 350-year rise of the West will be largely reversed. Global leadership may be shared, and the world is likely to be democratizing.

But the planet may also be racked by wars over food and water, with the environment threatened by climate change. Individuals, equipped with new lethal and disruptive technologies, will be capable of causing widespread harm. Global economic crises could well be recurring.

3-D printed organs. Brain chips providing superhuman abilities. Megacities, built from scratch. The U.S. intelligence community is taking a look at the world of 2030. And it is very, very sci-fi.

Every four or five years, the futurists at the National Intelligence Council take a stab at forecasting what the globe will be like two decades hence; the idea is to give some long-term, strategic guidance to the folks shaping America’s security and economic policies. (Full disclosure: I was once brought in as a consultant to evaluate one of the NIC’s interim reports.) On Monday, the Council released its newest findings, Global Trends 2030. Many of the prognostications are rather unsurprising: rising tides, a bigger data cloud, an aging population, and, of course, more drones. But tucked into the predictable predictions are some rather eye-opening assertions. Especially in the medical realm.

Can't wait to get my brain chip!

In all seriousness, I bet about 80% of this turns out to be completely false. According to people back in the day, we should all be driving hover cars now. Also, I think ignorance will continue to dominate and political squabbling etc. will continue to stand in the way of progress.

The reality is that even if this technology is created, it will be delayed as long as possible.

We'll be releasing technology advancements bit by bit to pad the pockets of greedy CEOs, CFOs, etc etc.

Yep, yep and yep. The only part of what the article descibes that will come true are the bad parts.

Global crises, brought on by environmental catastrophes and political and economic inequity, will be to the 21st century what world wars were to the 20th. China ("Asia" is PC garbage, does that include Japan/Burma/DPRK?) will never be a world power, in 2030 or ever, for the reason that the country has fundamental weaknesses that will sooner undo China's gains than be overcome. Notion of democracy spreading is ridiculous, the world is on the road to corporate feudalism.

And what Jushiro said.

The most relevant historical comparisons to what the 21st century will look like are:
1. The Crisis of the Third Century
2. Russia in 1914 (taking OWS as Russia in 1905)
3. France in 1780 (re-read the first chapter of Tale of Two Cities)

The real question is whether Humanity solves its problems before the biosphere collapses.
The only two possible outcomes are a fascinating dualism. I wonder which it will be...

(also: play SMAC, it will give you incredible insight)

EDIT: When they say "individuals", what they really mean is "populist revolutionaries", and when they say "global economic crises could be recurring", what they really mean is "wage slavery as a way of life".

We will be out of poverty because poverty will be the new normal making it not poverty. Take that.

This might be the closest thing to insight Meowth has ever said.

In 2030......history will repeat itself.

If it's true that our species is alone in the universe, then I'd have to say the universe aimed rather low and settled for very little.
