With all the homogenization, "vehicle combat," and other craziness in WoW, is it time to start looking into other MMOs, or is WoW still the best of all possible worlds?

I've enjoyed WoW for several years, and maybe it's just the boredom that comes at the end of an expansion...but is there something out there that might be better, or at the very least as good but different?

Has anyone tried anything else, like Age of Conan, Star Trek Online, or Aion? What did you like/hate about them?

Your Pal,
Jubber

Aion is an eye-candy grind-fest. Most MMOs don't offer anything new other than a different universe.

Every MMO from China is Chinese themed and bad in every aspect.
MMOs from Korea are grind-fests.
Every F2P is miserable once you hit the mid-game and designed to bait you into paying.

Maybe I will design and launch one after I win the lottery. It would be awesome. Something like...VIKING MONKEYS IN SPACE. That'd be solid gold right there.

Yeah.

Edit: I know the first caps rant was the filter, but what about the second?

I think FF14 has some real potential as an mmo, the previous one was flawed but had some strong points in it's favor.

The idea of monkeys that are vikings is so indescribably original and awesome that it merits being in caps, underlined, italicized in bold, and flashing in neon...and it only becomes that much more awesome when you move them into space.

In fact, I believe I will start penning the very first epic, but since this idea is so unbelievably fantastical, I will require the blood of a virgin to use as ink. Someone please give Vezir my address so he can Fedex me a pint of whatever it is oozing about in his veins feeding his corpulent and disgusting body.

I've heard it looking to be FF11 again.

I tried out Star Trek online at launch, it was ok, I just felt it needed more work before being launched.

The ship movment is like our vehicle combat with the speed of EVE, minus the depth that EVE has.

When it came to the ground combat everything felt like pure DPS classes. I did not feel like class roles were, or could be defined that well.

Plus the micro-transactions there are even worse than WoW.

i tried dungeons and dragons online a while back (ya lol w/e) and it wasnt too bad until you got to like level 5. its kinda neat because in some ways its like the old world long ass fucking 5 mans. you can also solo alot of the shit, and its more along the lines of figurin out traps and getting shit done the easiest way you can. since it is a f2p, its a good distraction if you're sitting in IF with a nose in your finger. i couldnt see myself ever paying a dime on it though.

it does get very very grindy after a while, and then you run out of shit to do that you get for free.

To answer the Jubber - I think WoW is the best of all the worlds... but other worlds do exist and they might be more appealing to you. WoW has PvE, PvP and... if you want, mob Grinding. Most other games can't deliver all that as well as WoW does. Another thing WoW has is the money to continuously develop the game. Sadly, most MMOs just can't compete because they can't afford to.

http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm

Check that list out. You might find something in there that is worth sharing with everyone else.

Nao... for the games I've tried since quitting WoW:

Warhammer Online has an unexpiring trial period now so you can try it for ever...ever...ver...ver...ver...er...er...er... The only downside is the level cap placed on players. Warhammer, at first, was kinda cool... but the content in the first couple levels was so bland and slow I couldn't imagine actually paying for that game.

Another game that recently came out as an 'MMO' is Global Agenda. This game is much like Guild Wars where you pay a fee for the game and then can play as often as you like. Global Agenda has some cool ideas and one super unique idea, but it fails in execution by forcing the player to constantly play the same instanced zones over and over. Also, the community seemed rather small. (So much for the first 'M') The combat is much like a FPS and graphically, it's fine... but the repetition is horrible. By level five you'll most likely be bored with the same environments. Another shit aspect is the central 'hub city' you play in. Everything happens there. There are no other cities. There is no outside world to explore. You simply team up with up to three other people, queue for a random instance, and go on your way. Aside from the PvE content, I read there is some engaging PvP content that is free. The good shit, sadly, you need to pay a subscription fee for. In the 'pay-to-play' PvP mode you are part of an agency (guild) and for a six-month period you must compete with other agencies for dominance over the world. More or less, the world is broken into hexagonal pieces and you need to take over the different zones... and you want the different zones because they buff your agency, I believe. Kinda like gathering resources from that zone...? I think Gamespot has a decent review on the game.

I miss how cheap WoW was for the time I got out of it... sure beats the hell out of buying a million console games... but I just hate that there isn't an 'end'... unless you're one of the nerds who can get every achievement in the game. I guess that's the end?

And since I'm thinking about it, does anyone know if there is an MMO where combat is more like a fighting game... where you'd have to execute a series of button combinations to pull off an attack... or maybe actually having a real block? I think that would be a fun game to play...

Oh yea. I played Aion on a Private Server and the game sucked... but the character creation was pretty badass.

I tried EVE Online for a few months. It really just made me miss a lot of things about WoW. I dunno why, but I just couldn't get into the "e-peen" part of it (having awesome ships and getting money). It was also pretty intricate...idk, I just didn't like it as much.

WoW, as of right now, is still the best their is in terms of MMOs. Blizzard has more resources than anyone else, and is smart/good enough to pull many of the best ideas from other MMOs. They also have a huge base with which to test things and perfect their craft.

WoW will remain the best MMO on the market until Blizzard makes another MMO.
