So, throughout my short time on this earth...I've learned a great many things. One thing I have learned, is that if the government considers something "illegal" it will have a great effect on how society perceives it. There is no greater example of this than Marijuana.

In college, I drank, and yes...I inhaled. However, I would often come across people who looked at me with disdain when they discovered that I liked to partake in the consumption of an illegal drug. These people, more often than not, were perpetual binge drinkers, yet felt they could take the high ground (no pun intended) because pot is "illegal" (even though some of these people were drinking underage...which is illegal too, but whatever). I heard many things like "omg, I would NEVER smoke weed, I can't believe you do that." I joined a frat, and our president was always bitching at the stoners about smoking inside "We could get in so much trouble and lose our house!" (Yeah...and getting underage freshman women hammered is just perfectly fine....hypocrits).

Why is Alcohol legal, while Marijuana is not?
Why do some people think that Alcohol is "not bad" while Mary Jane is the most evil thing there ever was?

To give you some facts to back up my assertion that both should be legal with age restrictions:

1. It is not possible to "OD" or kill yourself from smoking too much weed, you'd have to smoke your body weight in it...and you'd fall asleep before ever reaching that toxicity. Ever hear of alcohol poisoning?
2. When was the last time you ever heard of someone "getting high and starting a fight" or "getting thrown out of place X for being high and belligerent"
3. Alcohol damages your liver, Weed isn't very good for your lungs...can one say that weed is that much worse from a physical health standpoint?
4. I don't have the statistics, but I'm pretty sure drunk driving kills way more people than high driving. If you drive while high, you tend to go about 20 miles under the speed limit (seriously, one time I was going 45 in a 65 and my friend was like "man slow down!!!"). If you drive drunk, you'll be speeding and swerving.

P.S. If they legalized and taxed weed, do you know how much extra revenue the government could bring in? A lot. It would at least make a dent in that ole' deficit.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

TLDR: Why the heck is weed illegal in the United States while Alcohol is A-OK, causing people to judge those who smoke mary jane as being evildoers?

I wonder if the illegality of weed is rooted in the belief that it is suspected to be a gateway drug. I'm the worst person to talk on the subject though since I've never used any drugs and I've only been drunk once over a decade ago.

weed increases risk for mental diseases such as paranoia and schizophrenia greatly, partly because the thc content in modern weed is so much higher than 70s weed, so it has more of a detrimental effect, especially on your brain.

both arent good in excess, both are fine in small amounts and the views of each change from society to society, and decade to decade.

It may just be that alcohol is so deeply ingrained in our society that it's impossible to ban, not that it's so much healthier than weed.

I pretty much never smoke. The last time was 2 summers ago, we all split up to head home. My buddy was like a 10 minute walk away from his house, I was probably a 40 min walk + 20 min bus + 5 min walk. So I walked home, got on the bus [saw a girl I became desperately infatuated with, made a thread about it], walked home. Next day, talk to my friend, he told me he got paranoid people were chasing him or something. Then he said he got lost, and ended up getting home like 20 minutes later than me lmao (his walk was seriously walk down a street for 13 mins, turn left, walk down that street for 2 mins, home.)

pot didn't make so much drinking water safe to drink over the millenia of our civilizations upbringing, and we already tried to make it illegal in the states before.

The Holy Anointing Oil described in Exodus 30:22-25 was created from 500 shekels (about 6kg) of myrrh, half as much (about 3kg) of fragrant cinnamon, 250 shekels (about 3kg) of fragrant cane (kanehbosm, variously translated as cannabis or calamus), 500 shekels (about 6kg) of cassia, and a hin (about 4L) of olive oil.

Alcohol is deeply ingrained in our culture. Most of Western Europe has traditions in brewing alcohol that go back hundreds of years (namely Belgium, Germany, and France). Weed is probably illegal because of the drug war and the amounts of money that are being pumped into law enforcement because of it, not to mention its a good social control (hurrr weed is destroying our children! we have to stick together and abn it!).

That being said, I blatantly prefer alcohol over weed. Yeah, weed was fun, but I like the effects of alcohol more. I also drink 80% of the time to enjoy the flavor of what I'm drinking, which I never really did while smoking (one of my best friends has a growing operation that puts out a couple ounces of retarded dank every month).

Also, alcohol makes the LFD system thoroughly enjoyable.

EDIT: Usd, people have been using hemp for clothing products for thousands of years.

More likely it's the tobacco companies who are so deeply ingrained within both government and their own industry to allow any sort of competing product. Something natural without any of the added tar or chemical crap that can easily be grown anywhere and provides more relaxation than cigarettes isn't good for their bajillion dollar business. They lobby, hem and haw, finance "studies" to show how dangerous weed is, etc. The problem is, they have the influence to pull it off.

From most of what I've read (independent studies by various universities, etc), any adverse health effects from weed pale in comparison to those of cigarettes, yet cigs are perfectly legal/taxable/acceptable.

Disclainer- I've never used any drugs either. I'm not a fan of the more hardcore drugs, but I've got no problem with marijuana, or anyone who uses it in moderation. (Though potheads who toke up 4 or 5+ times every day are gross, and up there in grossness with the people who smoke a pack or two of cigarettes every day.)

I feel that tobacco companies already have measures in place to capitalize on the new weed market if it ever became legal.

It's okay bro. We were both irresponsible.

And I recall from sort of of discussion with a teacher that weed is/was made illegal because a group of people used it and when there were high they'd become brave and ask questions and the people in charge didn't like it. Hence banned.

Or something like that. No research, no facts, just something I remember hearing.
