So before i head off to university i need a new comp. So i am open to any suggestions as to any specific models anyone knows, or any opinions on how/what to put into a custom built one. Ill start looking now and post anything i think looks good for feedback if anyone cares to assist.

If you do wanna find shit for me, which would be awesome, would be looking for a laptop (i wouldve posted/bumped azelmas but its a desktop for him, i need a laptop). Would pref a screen round 14''ish, light enough to carry back and forth and w/e, dont need crazy hard drive space, dont download enough shit and RAM wise id prolly be playing WoW and other games.

Any input/help is greatly appreciated.

Edit: oh as for price range, anything sub 1k shouldnt scare my parents too much. just if that helps anyone find stuff

One i found now, looks well rounded to me.

Another, looks to me like itd be optimal for those 4 hour seminar things http://www.acer.ca/acer/productv.do?Lan ... xHistory=0

ok, got a third one

customized for a higher processor/better vid card though.

Just do some research on http://www.anandtech.com/ http://www.tomshardware.com http://www.hardocp.com http://arstechnica.com/ for like 2 weeks and find out what the best bang for your buck is for your price range then order parts on newegg or whatever americainians use and put it together yourself

and get a solid state drive.

Well, a big problem I see is this little misprint that says "laptop".

Annoying to upgrade and harder to maintain.

Quad I have one I'm selling for 350ish. With a little upgrades it'd be a really decent machine for just about anything.

Otherwise, build your own or find a knowledgeable friend and enlist their help.

Things that can be upgraded on laptops:

1. Ram
2. HD, big sexy hard drives add to price, get an external to store your "homework" on and save the money up front.
3. on some models you can change out optical drives.

Things that cannot be upgraded and should be focused on:

1. Processor
2. Graphics card, this is where you separate the crap from the semi crap.
3. Screen

You should focus on processor and video card preformace the most. Drop hard drive size to save some money and get a decent size external for 100 bucks or so. I have seen the screen shots of the micro-machine you play on and you should either go 15.4 wide screen or possibly get an external monitor. Seventeen inch monitors are nice but kill your power and get hot as hell. I went big on my monitor and video card on my laptop and upgraded the ram when it went on sale at best buy.
