Skill vs. Gear
If you want to know a little secret, part of the reason we can't use gear as a barrier to entry any longer is because the skill of the raiding population has grown so dramatically. The guilds who got the first kills in Icecrown probably could have done it with gear from a couple of tiers prior (with the possible exception of heroic LK). Skill trumps an enormous amount of power from gear.

I should make a macro for that every time someone mentions GS in Trade. It can go next to my P-word macro with quotes from Carlin.

"Ok we aren't such things and birds are pretty advanced. They fly and shit from anywhere they want. While we sit on our automatic toilets, they're shitting on people and my car while a cool breeze tickles their anus. That's the life."

I'd disagree with you, but they've done such a good job at watering down specs in terms of difficulty that I think that this is one of the few remaining factors in differentiating between players.

Last I checked, a expansion ago I was mashing a single key to victory.

I'm so glad that got watered down.

He was making reference to BC era warlocks that spammed shadowbolt and literally did nothing else. At least now most (read: all) classes push a minimum of three buttons.

I used to press slam immediately after my wing swing hit, before actually to account for latency.

I am the epitome of skill.

Which specs have been watered down? I'm pretty sure the majority of classes have more interesting and complex rotations/priorities now than they did during BC.
