It's what my in-home IT force recommends. It's free, doesn't eat up a lot of resources, and there are options available (for fee) that improve the services provided.

I'm using it on this machine right now. Between it and not doing stupid things with the interwebs, it works very well.

AVG is pretty good for anti-virus, plus it's free.

CCleaner and Ad-Aware are also free and somewhat useful.

When I said "none" I was actually being serious.

Antivirus software is nothing more than a resource-devouring, fear mongering tactic shoved down your throat by security "professionals" in the industry.

I am a software developer for a gov. contractor and for the past two years my main focus has been in network security, network forensics, packet manipulation, etc.

I have never run any antivirus software as long as I have been coding. Most of the antivirus software is so bloated that it is doing damage to your system equivalent to that which most "viruses" would do. Granted I have some honey pots on my home system that I use to collect new virus, trojans, attack techniques, etc...and then reverse them. But even before I knew how to do all that, I still never used it.

The best protection for your computer is internet "awareness". Only go to trusted sites. Download NOTHING from websites unless it is trusted content. You can also view the security certificates on "secure" sites to make sure they are valid. Something with a starting certificate of "verisign" is going to look a bit different than my mitm box which duplicates the certificate and lists it as "pbarnes.securityinc.com".

In addition, if someone actually wanted to get into your home network or put a virus on your system to destroy it, your commercial security solutions like packaged firewalls and antivirus software will be laughable

This ^

Best bet is to be aware, If King Abu from Africa wants you to click on an attachment with wire instructions don't do it. He isn't going to give you 75 mil US monies.

If a hyper link has something besides .com .org .html .jpg etc don't click on it. And even some cases if it isn't trusted don't click it.

Stay away from "free porn" sites or torrent sites etc. Free music/video downloading those are all harbors for virus uploading. Basically any free file hosting site that you download from can give you the shaft.

I did that for a couple weeks until I gave in and upgraded from my laptop's 15 inch monitor to a 24 inch.

Not really a porn guy.

My home network:
Gaming machine (windows vista)
Lenovo netbook dup'd from work machine (win xp)
Lenobo netbook (Backtrack - linux flavor)
Dev machine (Win xp, win 2003 server, fedora 12...second two are vm's)
Transparent firewall (Fedora 12)

I have a few hard drives and a router after the firewall as well
