Someone posted this on their facebook:

Quote:
"Enlightened people are independent of the opinions of other people. They are not running their lives based on what others think." Dr. Wayne Dyer

I replied to it, it was like 2 am and I was tired but I felt like writing something to get the mind juices flowing. It was really wrong but basically I had said that independent opinion doesn't necessarily make you enlightened. By that definition you understand few if any other opinions and that makes you ignorant, not enlightened.

Someone replied to mine and compared enlightened to people like Einstein or Edison.

I replied saying scientists are not necessarily enlightened just because they discovered something or formulated a lasting theory. These men were geniuses, not enlightened. There are few if any truly enlightened people in all of history. Being enlightened, to me, means you've searched for, discovered, put the time and effort into understanding, and had the discipline required to actually dissect these opinions and formulate your own. The end result might be less than satisfactory but we're not discussing morals, we're discussing men and women whose knowledge of the more troubling questions related to human life raises them to that status.

Basically put, I can't think of a single person who I'd actually call enlightened but then again it's early and I'm tired. I'm certainly not enlightened and I go out of my way to understand everything about something before I make a decision if I'm forced to. I try not to believe in anything but rather have good ideas about things just because men who only believe are the men who make the world a dangerous place.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/Enlightened

Definition wise, it varies from subject to subject.

If you're referring to being 'enlightened about life', then nobody is 'enlightened', it's just to what extent are you ignorant. You can't know everything.

Being independent of the opinions of others (specifically mass opinion) does not constitute ignorance by default. You can be wholly aware of said opinions. You can reasonably put them to scrutiny and criticism, and if they were to pass, accept the ideas. The best way to determine if something is actually true, is to try to poke holes in it. Look for consistency in everything. Question everything.

Also, mental masturbation.

Also also, I could go smoke some K2, then I'll really start saying some crazy shit.

"Ok we aren't such things and birds are pretty advanced. They fly and shit from anywhere they want. While we sit on our automatic toilets, they're shitting on people and my car while a cool breeze tickles their anus. That's the life."

he's definitely not living his life based on other peoples expectations.

that quote to me sounds like a smarmy way of saying "be non conformist like the rest of us."

ironically if you start to live your life as that quote advises, you will not be living your life like that quote advises.

Just for some more brain ejaculation, I watched this a yesterday.

There's a section where he talks about the subversion of survival instincts, and how survival instincts are basically out of date in this country.

Also, when I say survival instincts, I mean the things Mother Nature has done to the human brain and body to do what Mother Nature wants. Mother Nature wants you to keep the species alive, plain and simple. You need to stay alive, be strong enough to care for young, and etc, etc.

Subversion of sex: Exploiting the libido (generally of young males). Such as those 72 virgins in heaven, using good looking people in advertising. You either want to fuck the "good looking" girl or be the "good looking" girl. Mother Nature makes you want "good looking" people, because they're generally healthy.

Subversion of sweet: Sweet fruits are good for you, they keep you healthy, and subsequently Mother Nature gave you a craving for such things. This is exploited by overly-sweetened things, like candy.

Subversion of eating: It used to be in your best interest to eat any time food was available, because food may not always be available. Not relevant when food is always available like it is here.

I could go on a little bit, I won't though. But it made me wonder how hard marketing really fucks us. Not that getting fucked is always a bad thing, but are the perceived good fucks always as good as we think?

I know a whole lot of people got fucked by a certain mount, and it was a bloody, unpleasant mess. Some of you may have bought it, and still think it was rational. Think about it some more.

I like how the British dude said the world had a collective sigh of relief when Obama was elected... I've just seen more global economic turmoil, low growth and higher taxes. Guess the whole world was fooled, eh?

Anyways, this old man sucks. He's a boring listen.

Not trying to be an ass weena or anything, but on the subject of what you said and enlightenment, i would think that being enlightened requires one to be able to come to a conclusion with just the bare facts through reason and personal reflection. Some of the things you said above, given the basic knowledge of background i would hope that many people could conclude for themselves. The connections are not difficult by any stretch of the imagination, yet there are videos that spoon feed things like that to the masses.

If you are "enlightened" like that, it is just a shadow of what it should be/is.

Enlightenment is a silly thing, and needs to be preceded by an identifier to mean anything. I imagine we're talking about personal moral enlightenment here, rather than, say, spiritual enlightenment in the Buddhist sense.

Which leads to the question that if it takes so much narrowing down to define, is it even something that can be quantified on a general level and applied to people as a group? I try to avoid "enlightenment" because it's nebulous. Someone who runs contrary to the established social system isn't necessarily an enlightened thinker; he could just as easily be some douchebag who thinks raping children is great, and that guy's definitely not beholden to what others think. I don't dig the anti-conformity for its own sake. If you don't have purpose, you're just as shallow and stupid as the ignorant masses you claim to be separate from.
