I have this video card - a GeForce of some sort, I believe - and it has two DVI outputs. It came with a pair of cables that connect to a single DVI port and split it into two VGA outputs: one for each of its two DVI outputs, it seems.

I misplaced those cables, and now need to output DVI -> VGA. Can I use a standard DVI->VGA converter instead of the weird splitter cables? Are they proprietary, can I find another easily? What is the purpose behind these unusual cables?

Yes. It is just giving you the option from one port with two outputs for multiple monitors you could probably use one of those cables and still leave one side unplugged and it would work.

Oh, it does. But I moved in next to this Goodwill and bought a small 14" LCD to position next to my cot. It doesn't have a DVI input, only VGA. I also bought a small, wireless, illuminated keyboard. My trackball is wireless.

Go ahead, take your best shot.

A comparable analogy between VGA and DVI is: VGA:DVI::USB(1.0/2.0):USB(2.0/3.0), respectively. What is meant by that is that DVI was the upgraded option from VGA, but it still maintained being backwards-compatible. With that said, if you just get a simple converter-piece you'll be able to use the monitor with your graphics card, etc, etc, etc.

Assuming your ports are really DVI-A compatible, then yes, a simple dvi to vga converter should work.

If you only had vga on your computer and hooked it with a vga/dvi converter to a DVI-D port on a tv, you would get nothing. That's where the analogy fails.

edit for link

this is the cable used on some dells, that isn't actually dvi.

Um, I meant take shots at the fact I'm nerdy enough to set up a second terminal by my cot, and what I could possibly want to view on my monitor by my cot, and how the fact I sleep on a cot reflects on my sex life (or absence thereof).

Shopping at Goodwill as a young person on a budget is just good sense =)

(And its a monitor not a TV...I do not own a TV)

Ilu all too tho =) working on internet...and by that I mean /shakefist at Verizon

As I said, my graphics card came with these cables...and as it happened I unwisely threw them away Monday when cleaning out my old apt, wanting to slim down my pile of spare parts and rubbish. Seems like whenever I do that it's not a week before I need some spare part =_=

I could, of course, simply buy a replacement off eBay, but those cables seem to be of far poorer construction than what came with my video card. I particularly liked the 18" of cable between the DVI and VGA inputs, as well as the fact the VGA outputs were blue and the DVI input was white.

I don't like the idea of spending more cash on accessories for a monitor than the monitor itself, nor spending cash on an inferior version of what I just threw away. So instead: if someone has a spare such cable from their own video card, mail it to me, and I'll give you 5000g. And a big thanks.

I wish I could sleep on a cot, don't have one though. My dad has this bomb ass cot, it all fits in a bag like one of those foldable chairs. I spent the longest time sleeping on a mattress on the floor with only a blanket. Sometimes I just sleep on the floor, it feels good on my chest and ribs, like I'm being punched in them and then I have dreams about Fight Club. Man I love the floor. Especially when it's cold.

As for goodwill, I look their on occasion for neat shirts and DVDslol, typically I find nothing. I do most my shopping at Walmart followed by Bealls Outlet(lots of good t shirts and such).

I always knew I liked Aestu. Fuck any of you assholes who don't like him(though I don't think anyone here dislikes him).

What the fuck is this? Goddamn insomnia!
