Coming up in November, California will vote to make Marijuana straight up legal, and taxable. I think this is fantastic for many reasons:

1. Stimulus for a sagging economy - tax revenue can be used to help states' budget, and it will give honest growers and sellers legal sources of income

2. Destroying an underground market - want to control violence in Mexico/Southern California? Make weed legal.

3. Save taxpayer dollars spent fighting a losing battle against Cannabis.
- No more wasted DEA/Police dollars raiding people who are just smoking weed and growing a few plants in their basements
- No more wasted money on helicopters and anti-drug raids flying over Cali looking for backyard growing operations
- No more wasted money sending non-violent offenders to jail for chiefing

4. What's easiest for a kid to get, tobacco, alcohol, or weed?

The answer is Weed, because a dealer doesn't ask to see an ID.

Even Fox News, with people who I can never see eye-to-eye with (Beck/Palin) has come around on this issue:

Can't believe Amerika, even one state, would do this before us. Amazing.

And most jobs require a drug test to get hired...

Pointless.

Explain???

If pot were legal I don't see how a company could refuse to employ you if you test positive for Marijuana. In fact you'd probably have more than enough reason to take them to court over such a thing (if it were legal).

Obviously this is different if you were showing up to work high...which the legislation proposes would be cause for termination (just like if you showed up to work drunk)

Now if it were something like Coke, Meth, Heroin, or whatever...then yes I can see a company being concerned

**Also: From my experience, most companies don't really care about Marijuana consumption...it's the hard stuff they test for.

Case and point: I took a drug test for a pharmaceutical company internship, I know I tested positive for weed...I got the internship anyway.

My buddy took a drug test for a grocery store...he had smoked just the night before...he got the job.

If California legalizes weed, it will inherently be legalizing hemp as well. Hemp is one of the most productive resources on the planet and that alone will easily put hundreds of thousands to work if it goes through.
The success from this could not only set an example that leads to saving California, but also other areas(poor/farming areas/App. Mtns) around the country that are suffering severly due to idiotpolicy.

You can't even get high from hemp unless it's the size of a telephone pole and Canadian farmers are getting rich why make your country suffer? Because Congress is either a) suffering from inferior political philosophy that hinders liberty b) is mostly idiots c) sold out solely to special interests

GO CALI GO GO GO GO!! Liberty ftw

These would most likely still happen, why would they let you make your own weed if the sole purpose is to make it taxable?

I'd argue that tobacco is easier to come by than weed.

Of course they have, it will pass even if they take a stand against it, why not get some moderate voters on their side.

Not saying it shouldn't happen, I think it should, but people are somewhat too eager to let it happen it seems.

I'd say most drug violence is cocaine-related.

Weed is the harmless 20-something's drug, and everyone's done it.

I'm pretty sure you'd be allowed to grow for personal use under the proposed law.

I know it's not the same thing, but you can grow your own food at home (or tobacco if you had the right conditions) without the government knocking on your door for the tax money you would have paid them for it had you bought it from a store.

If you go commercial though, I imagine that's a whole other animal.

Yeah, they only test because they know what kind of people are applying.

I need a drug test just to get into my BSN *program*. And I'm sure I'll need one once I get a job too.

That said, I approve and more states should do this. Not that it matters to me cause I'm allergic, but whatever.

Home-brew alcohol which is pretty easy to do, too.

If they did legalize it I would probably smoke it just as often as I do now, which is a couple times a year max. I don't really get the appeal of it, I'd rather get drunk.
