One of my friends is a physicist and he and I had a talk about God. He said something along the lines of, "Even a scientist has to submit to the idea that there may be a God." He and I weren't saying that God was the same human-like being in the clouds... but we're thinking if there is one that it's some consciousness or wavelength in the multiverse.

"Scientists" aren't monolithic, least of all in their extra-professional views.

Well, he said that because all scientists can't explain everything. For instance, where did all the energy in the universe come from? (This is what we were discussing when he said that.) Did it just always exist? How does something 'just exist' without a creation?

(This conversation was a few years ago and I don't remember all the details... but it was the point in my life when I had to consider myself as agnostic. Just as I can't prove God exists, I can't prove he doesn't exist.)

not to mention that matter can not be created nor destroyed, you can only chagne its state.

where'd it come from?

Well, if I recall correctly, matter is just a state of energy, and its the conservation of energy which states energy can't be created or destroyed - not matter. (Although matter is energy.) From his explanation, he said energy just always existed and the big bang didn't spread matter through the universe from some super-dense matter ball... yet it started cooling the energy from an origin point and it started to coalesce into physical matter, spreading outward from the origin. Something like that anyways. His response to that same question was the idea that scientists have to consider the idea of God.

They don't need to. Anything that claims to be "all" is only an illusion. Religion claims to be "all" but is merely a lie.

Science fulfills its intended scope to perfection. If you want to go past that, go study philosophy.

God claims to be all... and for all you know, he could be right. You can't prove it one way or another.

Oh, and energy is all... but I guess it's an illusion, too?

I am not an atheist. Atheists believe there is no God; I know there is no God, and I know because I understand why people believe there is one and why it is a lie.

It's irrelevant. It's not the place of science to question reality beyond the material and knowable. Religion is a lie, but if you want the answers to those questions, study philosophy.

You're such a joke. Just because you know there isn't a God when there is absolutely no way of knowing if there is or isn't proves that. You just believe that you're right, just as a theist or atheist believes what they believe - no way of proving either way - yet you somehow have the answer and are once again better than the rest. "I believe I am better therefore I am" can swing multiple ways.

Science should stop when they can't explain something? It's science that let's us see beyond what we knew decades ago... and until we learned or observed what we did, it was unknown.

God is the ultimate straw man.

When most people speak of God, they are using the word to express one of two things:

1. The explanation for things we don't know by people who are unwilling to accept not knowing the answer.

2. The anthropomorphism for the universe writ large.

Occasionally you still meet people who think God is a man with a white beard in the clouds, but those people are likely to believe in all types of crazy shit.

However, of those two things... both express an unwillingness to let go of the religious idea they learned as a child, but both are generally harmless unless that person is in a position of power where they might channel their own issues and stymie science.

who cares if there's a god or not? either way it doesn't impact your life one way or another. god or not, prayer or not, things still happen in the same 50/50, roll of the dice, flip of the coin type way.

Verily, I have often laughed at weaklings who thought themselves proud because they had no claws.

Best explanation I've heard so far.

In all seriousness though, it's pretty much a complete waste of time to contemplate such things.

"Ok we aren't such things and birds are pretty advanced. They fly and shit from anywhere they want. While we sit on our automatic toilets, they're shitting on people and my car while a cool breeze tickles their anus. That's the life."
