http://religion.blogs.cnn.com/2010/11/20/pope-says-condoms-may-be-ok-in-some-circumstances/?hpt=T2

Quote:
"There could be single cases that can be justified, for instance when a prostitute uses a condom, and this can be a first step towards a moralization, a first assumption of responsibility, to develop again the awareness of the fact that not all is allowed and that one cannot do everything one wants," Benedict said.

TL;DR: Condoms are immoral but only if you're not boinking dirty hoes.

I can't believe this shit.

I'm not against prostitution on any moral grounds, it's the hypocrisy of the statement the Pope made that irks me.

Catholicism has a history of contradicting itself based on public opinion.

I just watched last year's Intelligence Squared debate ("Is Catholicism a force of good in the world?") with Christopher Hitchens and Stephen Fry versus an African archbishop and the British Conservative MP last night. Hitchens and Fry obviously demolished them, but there were a few things that made me cringe.

During the debate, condoms and child abuse, among other things, were continuously brought up. While the archbishop and MP had numerous opportunities to justify Catholicism's ban on contraception and indirect support of child rape, they never did. They consistently dodged the questions and comments that mentioned either issue, and instead went on the offensive about how Catholics donated to charities.

Of course, they both did support the religion's ban on contraception and indirect support of child rape. They've apparently spoken about, at the very least, condoms and how they're evil.

With this new statement from the Pope himself, how can those who've denounced the use of condoms bring themselves to agree with him? It's their past opinions versus "Christ's word."

Empires tend to collapse in on themselves when they contradict their own statements. Since Catholicism WAS essentially an empire for centuries (and still has the characteristics of one), then it should topple faster than the AIDS victims that it kills by the thousands every day.

Most religions that cause a problem for anyone are ones that either prohibit contraception, like catholicism, or that try to promote having tons of kids, like islam.

I'm not sure why religion thinks it should influence breeding habits, but there ya go.

Religions who espouse the "go forth and multiply" doctrine did so and do so because, in order to survive/grow, they need a population of people who have been taught the basic tenets from childhood. These people are less likely to bolt the religion, altogether, and more likely to raise their own children in said faith. There are many examples of this. Many of these promoted the idea of multiple wives, particularly in warring societies that lose males disproportionately, because it only takes one bull to cover several cows, so to speak. Adoration and praise of women who birthed many children is also common. Also, men like the idea of it being okay to have sex with several women.

Governments have also used these ideas for pretty much the same reasons.

The real reason to have a large number of children is and always was to support local agricultural practices, though. Since most early civilizations (Sumerians, Egyptians, and the Xia come to mind) were based on agriculture, they needed a large population group that could tend to the crops that their ancestors had started planting.

I mean, there was always a need for military forces, but the Xia are a really good example of why populations grew out of agricultural necessity. Aside from opposing regional clans, they rarely had to fight, but they still had large numbers of children due to their farming practices.

EDIT: And to get my point back to Catholicism...

Religion wasn't the deciding factor on whether or not you'd have a lot of children. Some stressed it after their formation, especially Catholicism, but they didn't necessarily invent the idea.
