Immigration and Customs is under Homeland Security. Shutting down websites that sell illegal goods to Americans(unlicensed jerseys for example) would be under their purview.

All the immediate obama hate was pretty funny though. ICE has been under HS since early Bush, and these shutdowns were a part of an on-going investigation. ICE is firmly within their rights (and would have been no matter who was in office) and this is the kind of thing they wouldn't have had to go ask the president's permission for. They were shutting down illegal sites, and like it or not pirating music is still illegal (not that it's going to stop anyone).

I wonder if all the bullshit obama-crying would have still happened if it were child pornography sites instead.

I wasn't really viewing it as bush v obama, just as both child porn and pirating music are illegal and both are valid targets for law enforcement.

These people already have their mind made up that Obama is the worst president in the history of the US, but I would hope that even these idiots would pause before complaining that child porn sites were shut down.

Given all we've talked about on these forums I wonder if we've got our own homeland security peon who reads all our posts.

p.s. Jubber's got plutonium.

If a website isn't hosting material or trackers then is it really an illegal website? I can buy shutting down a tracker or a website that actually hosts the files/torrents... but what about the websites that just provide an interface to search another website's tracker? Is that no different than Google? Where does it stop?

I'm safe. I apparently love Obama so much that my avatar depicts the man.

Granted in the case of torrents it's not going to put much of a dent in the activity, but closing down sites that sell illegal physical merchandise it will.

The issue is intent. Google doesn't set out to infringe on copyright, whereas that is the express purpose of these websites.

Definitely don't dig the lack of notification, illegality or not. The domain itself is legal property, even if what you're doing on that domain isn't. This isn't that far removed from the government taking your house because you're growing weed in your yard.

It's merely enforcement of the law. Property is property, even if the "property" is art or music.

Right, but you can't actually do that.
