So I think I've finally defeated my WoW addiction. It's funny because it turned out to be a slow process. After months of barely logging on, slowly just removing myself completely from the game, I've canceled my account for the last time (I hope). I won't be getting Cata.

I've quit multiple times for multiple reasons...even going so far as to delete all my characters in an effort to prevent myself from returning. No matter, I always came back. I love how kind the Blizzard GMs were in restoring my characters. Blizzard is such a pimp running a pimp game lol.

Perhaps now will be different since canceling the account was a mere footnote, with me having already logging in about once every 2-3 weeks. Only time will tell of course though.

TLDR:

How many times have you tried to quit WoW? Have you stayed away? If so, how have you done it? If you haven't been able to ever successfully quit, do you think you ever will?

Does it speak to a problem in society or the game itself that so many people quit and come back...try to quit and fail, etc.? Why have you quit?

PS: Tehra you better contribute here or I will be sorely disappointed.

Twice. The first time was from Feb 2007 until sometime mid 2007. I moved from my apartment to my house and I spent all my free time working on the basement. The second time was late 2009. I got sick of raiding and other guild drama so I said fuck it and I never logged in. I did it by just finding something else to occupy my free time with... like the house, programming, guitaring, etc.

I don't plan on getting Cataclysm... but my wife does, so we'll see how temptation plays into this.

Have not.
Though I have only been playing since April of 08 or so.

I could see quitting when we start having kids, but we will see

Zero. The closest was cancelling my second account for a month or so. I find that the time I spend playing WoW was the time that I used to play Xbox or watch TV. I still play with my kids, I still go to dinner with my wife, and I still do work around the yard and house. I could do more out in the yard but I attribute that more to my work hours and I get home, eat dinner, and by the time I could do anything it is dark. There are times where I need to just basically get up and leave my desk. My wife gets aggrevated at times but it is more of an issue of her wanting me to drop everything I am doing to do something that I would have been in less of a hurry to do 6 years ago than I am now. I actually do more with my kids and around the house than she does, so when she brings up my "stupid game" every three months or so I remind her of that.

No need, just teach them how to click and press hotkeys once their motor functions are developed enough! Make sure to not let them become keyboard turners.

once, and im still not reactivating.

I got bored, and now at univ i have less time, and friends come in and interupt more often. so what i really liked, the 2 hour giggle raid fests with freinds, or intense arena sessions just dont/cant happen anymnore or at the level i would be satisfied with.

For that reason i dont feel the need/desire to reactivate.

3 times, been playing since release. All unsuccessful.

However... my last one was a pretty good streak from May'09 to about 3 months ago I didn't play. I was really busy with the job and had no time to do anything I really wanted on the game. I got through the last of my classes and a few RL friends talked me into coming back.

Pretty much every time I have ever quit was because of financial reasons, however once I was back into the black I inevitably came back, only time I ever quit playing for other reasons was a week and a half long break after leaving a raiding guild that made the game feel more like a job than a game.

I think a lot of people have issues with quitting because its a comfort and escape thing; no matter whats going on in your life the game is always there as a distraction from problems, and its not like even after months away from the game you can't get caught up to current gear levels and what-not with a few weeks of effort. I've only actually seen one person quit for good so far, the rest have all come back eventually even Jubbergun when he was out of work and couldn't afford to keep the subscription gonig.

Never quit. I don't really see the need. Wow is exactly what I want it to be, I play it as an out or an escape/stress release. I play on average about 5 hours a week if that and it is never when my wife or son are awake.

@Henq - Having kids will definitely cut down on your wow time. Just the day to day things it adds take time. Obviously kids>wow so kids always win out. Plus GF/WIFE Rage for not doing it isn't worth it :D

3 times for a bit over a year each time. Basically whenever a kid was born we went inactive for about a year.

We have other things we do regularly with friends, but with 3 kids asleep in bed the options are tv, books, interwebs, wow, or twisty bobcat pretzel.

Twice. They weren't really "hey guys, I'm quitting", but it was more of me just getting burned out then stopping. First time was for a couple months when ulduar came out until ToC had been out for about a month. The second time is my first time really cancelling. I haven't logged in since.

I quit in July 2009. I took a scroll of rez in oct/nov of 2009 to say hello. As you know, I didn't play my characters much during that month.

I also stopped by around february of 2010. Then I gave my account to Krunkz over the summer, and there's an authenticator on it. Last time I actually logged into the account was sometime in february, and that was to use it as a glorified IRC client.

I originally played for the exploration concept, new shiny things, etc. Later on it became about the people. My gameplay experience is different than yours, though.
