House Democrats said the GOP amendment, which would have required background checks for child care workers, was an effort to kill the bill and delayed a final vote on the legislation rather than vote on the amendment.

I'm ok with that amendment tbh.

although the amendment could very much be a good one, one must also note that child care workers don't occupy elementary school cafeterias and it has no place in THIS bill. i say take it out, pass this current bill, then propose the background check in a future one.

edit:
Quote:
"It's not about making our children healthy and active," said Rep. John Kline, R-Minn., the top Republican on the House Education and Labor Committee. "We all want to see our children healthy and active. This is about spending and the role of government and the size of government — a debate about whether we're listening to our constituents or not."

it would seem with comments like that that the GOP is actually attempting to kill the bill

true. still, i dont see how one good bill doesn't get passed becase someone else wants to add something good to it. maybe something else in the bill the democrats dont like, or whatever.

still, i hate amendments that are unrelated like that. even if i like the amendments.

keep in mind, these are the same schmucks from this article:
http://www.salon.com/news/taxes/index.h ... at_says_no

cliffs: All 42 Republican Senators signed a letter declaring that they would block Congress from any action at all until tax cuts for the wealthy have been safely extended.

They aren't adding the amendment to better the bill, or to pass the amendment.

They're doing it purely to stall or kill the bill they're adding it to. They're doing it to force another round of procedure to slow things down.

Basically, you think "oh that's not a bad amendment", but to them it doesn't even matter what's in it. They are not trying to pass it.

If it's something that's going to cost more money, I'm fine with that. We need to stop throwing money at everything and tighten the purse-strings. Just because someone yelled, "BUT IT'S FOR THE CHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIILDREN" before dipping their hands in the coffer doesn't mean it's a necessary expenditure.

We are still at the point where when democrats are serious about passing crap, they can bypass committees and just bring things to the floor for a vote...without debate, if they choose. The only reason we get these "republicans are to blame for this stall" articles is because there isn't enough will among the democrat assemblage to pass it. The republicans just make the better fall guys.

Jubber

The logic that its the Democrats' fault for something that the Republicans did is exactly what's wrong with America right now.

If they were serious about passing this or anything else, there isn't jack-shit the republicans could do to stop them. They aren't that concerned about it, or it'd be rammed through the same way health-care "reform" was. That puts the ball back on the democrat side of the court. There are obvious representatives in the democrat caucus who aren't too keen on passing it, either.

Jubber

Except for, of course, what they've done the entire administration, which is filibuster.

You can't even argue the "herp derp they have a filibuster-proof majority" anymore.

They do until January.

This is, of course, assuming that the entire Democratic party is lock-step like the Republicans are, which we both know it isn't. A Democrat from West Virginia is about as "liberal" as a Republican from the same state.

Really? You mean like Governor Manchin, who passed a version of cap-and-trade in WV (which is fucking retarded since the state's major product is coal), who was just recently elected to the senate? The only reason he got elected is because he did an add where he shot the Obama cap-and-trade bill...which honestly isn't a far cry from the one he signed off on...proving once again that hillbillies are fucking stupid (at least the ones with TVs).

However, that is exactly my point, Mayo. There are democrats who don't support passage of this measure, either. Don't act like the republicans are the only ones at fault (and I'm not sure at this point what kind of "fault" is attached to not increasing spending) because not everyone wants to follow Reid and Pelosi down Nutty-nut-nut Street.

they clearly don't
what they're doing down is delaying until their filibuster
also, background checks on everyone would also cost more money

know what else costs a lot of money?

two wars

They clearly do, math disagrees with you. If Pelosi and Reid can't get their people to sign off, it doesn't make them any less unfilibusterable (I don't thinks that a word...) it just means that no one would have to filibuster anyway because not enough people are serious about passing this in the first place.

Didn't we just elect a guy that was going to shut down our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan? I guess he got filibustered out of doing it...by that group of people who don't have enough people to filibuster.

You are right, though. Background checks do cost more money. Fuck that. If you're dumb enough to get caught by your school's hired pedophile, you damn well better enjoy your fucking.

Jubber

the fact that half the democratic party are a bunch of fencewalking mother fuckers who will side with the status quo no matter what it may be very much proves that they don't have a filibuster-proof congress and thus my point triumphs

additionally, i think obama is too busy peddling guantanamo bay prisoners around to other countries to bothering doing anything with what he promised on the campaign trail
