...and handed power over to the military.

I heard that when repressive governments hand over full control to their respective military, the government rules with a Play-Dough fist.

Oh, wait.

Yeah Egypt is fucked. Some military general is going to take this temporary power and run with it.

If Egypt ends up setting up a true democracy I will be extremely surprised.

It's either going to be an Islamic "Republic" or a military dictatorship imo.

Sucks for the US, because we definitely just lost one of our biggest (and pretty much only arab ally...not counting Israel, who everyone hates)

It may work out the way it did for the Turks. The military is powerful enough to prevent a potential theocracy, but does not rule. I'm not as pessimistic as you clowns.

The Egyptian military is backed by the US.

I don't think the Egyptian military is running anywhere.

And I thought he dropped his powers on his vice president.

Yeah that was just a move to try to keep power and appease the people. Having finally stepped down, now he truly has lost his power.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Call me a pessimist, but I don't trust humanity, or any country run by a military.

It's not as if they were a democracy before. Worst case scenario is they go from an autocratic dictatorship that rules through brute force to an autocratic dictatorship that rules through brute force. They can only really go up from where they're starting.

The military taking care of things is probably the best thing that could happen for a variety of reasons. According to most reports, the military is an institution most Egyptians trust and respect. The officers, especially those in positions of command, are educated and westernized. After the turmoil dies down, elections will take place and things will be better, and the military will be able to guide that.

worst case is it stays the same.

the military probably knows to play ball at the very least because we want them to, and we make good weapons.

Last night he said he was going to stay in power until September, more protests ensued...This morning he steps down.

Obviously no dictator can survive without the military's support, clearly the Egyptian military wasn't interested in firing at its own people leaving us to assume the military told Mubarak to gtfo.

Parliament is filled with Mubarak loyalists, as is the caretaker cabinet. The military will control shit until the elections, and it's a lot easier to deal with a relatively small cabinet than it is to have to supervise a much larger branch of the government.
