I don't mind if we knock out some of Gaddafi's airforce (which we probably sold him anyways), but I don't think we need to get involved any farther than that. However, there is still a difference either way.

If two men say the exact same sentence but one of them is lying, you can't come down on the one telling the truth because he sounds like the other guy. That doesn't really make sense.

If you think the "pretense" here is any different, you may be right, but not in the way you think. In Iraq, the justification (among the 9 million given) was that Saddam had violated the terms of the cease-fire from the original conflict where we pushed Iraq out of Kuwait. That was the legal basis presented to the international community, despite the fact that there were several other reasons, such as evidence of development of weapons of mass destruction (which was produced not by our own failed intelligence agencies, but by the UK's secret services...who stand by their assessment to this day), and possible ties to Al Qaeda (prominent members were known to have met with Saddam).

Even with the giant "oops" factor of some of these reasons having turned out to have been bogus, Iraq was still in violation of the terms of the cease-fire. The Saddam government had previously cracked down on its own populace in the manner Gadaffi is cracking down on his, in a far more sinister manner because of the use of gas weapons. Rape as a form of torture/intimidation/questioning was common, and Saddam's own sons personally engaged in the practice.

For all his myriad faults, Bush led on Iraq and Afghanistan. He didn't sit on his hands and wait for someone else to make the decisions for him. Yeah, they may not have been the right decisions, but I have more respect for someone who takes the responsibility than I do for someone who waits for cover. If this goes bad, we're going to here how Obama wasn't really for this, and he was just going along to support the international community. If this works out, it will all have been his idea, and we'll hear about how closely involved he was with the decision to do this. There will be no scrutiny from the media-in-general regarding this.

The big difference here is that every smelly hippie screaming "no blood for oil" a few years back can't scream it now because they're this guy's bitch. No one would give a shit if there weren't a fuck-load of oil in Libya, and the world market weren't being fuckerized by Libya's internal turmoil. Sure, we all support this for humanitarian reasons, but don't stick your head in the sand and pretend the main impetus here isn't about oil, at least for the people making the decisions.

There were "real reasons" on this occasion and the previous occasions to which USD was comparing it. To suggest otherwise is sophistry. Don't cop out on 8+ years of telling us how wrong this is now just because it's "your guy" doing it this time, Mayo, because that's complete and utter bullshit. The only difference now is that the person making the call can't claim it has anything to do with our national interest other than oil.
