I doubt this will amount to anything - seems like another premature PR stunt.

Viruses are not bacteria. The mechanics that affect them don't necessarily cause resistance.

Viruses such as polio and smallpox have been nearly eradicated for just this reason.

My dad always had the crackpot theory that AIDS was a man-made disease (specifically, a government). If you consider that it didn't really blow up until the 1980s. I dunno...pretty shady. In the history of mankind, all the people who lived close to monkeys for thousands of years...it didn't really become a thing until the 80s???

I bet it was some government trying to make a virus to kill people, and it got out of hand. Obviously they'd test it on poor Africans first.

Think of how weird the virus acts - how different it is than so many other viruses. It attacks your T-cells...your very immune system.

Okay conspiracy bullshit storm done.

Are you or your dad mixing up AIDS with the Tuskegee Experiment?

Has anyone seen Majic Johnson lately. He looks healthier than anyone on his Lakers teams from the 80s and 90s. There have been all kinds of rumors about him going to other countries for treatments and shit, but no one ever seems to think to do these treatments here.

Oh, and the whole AIDS monkey relationship was supposedly brought about by Western scientist trying to explore the deep jungles of Africa and their crew apparently started all of the shit. The natives were supposedly resistent to the HIV strain after years of exposure but none of this can be proven. I think the blame should fall on Rosanne Barr.

9 level 90s and 10 85s, Damn I need another hobby.

As for Magic Johnson...I like to refer to the southpark episode where the cure for AIDS is determined to be money...literally cash placed in a blender and ingested. It's satire based in fact.

Magic Johnson drinks like a thousand dollar cocktail every day and gets all sort of crazy treatment because he can afford it.

IDK - re: monkey theory. What were they doing? Fucking the monkeys?

Yeah, if by "nonsense" you're talking about "making sure the medicine doesn't kill people and/or cause horrible side effects".

There's a whole testing and scheduling system that I learned when I was in a psych class once, but for the life of me I forget the details.

Magic Johnson doesn't have AIDS yet. His early detection, ability to afford the medicine, exceptional health and condition, and luck, have allowed him to remain in the HIV stage.

AIDS has been a 'thing' for a very long time, it just didn't affect Americans until the 80s (and there were infections before the 80s, the fact that people don't die from AIDS but from opportunistic infections means there was no single cause of death to point to one underlying disease). It's explosion had to do with proper social climate. Look at cholera, before everyone started cramming into overcrowded cities with horrible sanitation it wasn't as much of a worry. It wasn't just suddenly created in the 1800s, it was just the proper social conditions to allow for the bacteria to rapidly spread.

its something like a 3rd of a percent of americans that have full blown aids.

can't find the link though, i always clear my history when looking up STD's. DONT WANT NO SUSPICIONS.

still, if we wipe out this virus that's excellent. then we can move on to the next.

I am pretty sure you can't kill a virus. you'll still HAVE the virus if you have it. I think it'll be more along the lines of vaccination. which, within a generation or two, will wipe it out. so kudos to whoever came up with it.

Looks like 1959 is the first "maybe" HIV case. In the history of civilization that doesn't seem like that long. I see your point about cholera. I just don't understand a few things:

1. How exactly it got transmitted from the monkeys - didn't it have to be blood to blood contact or sexual activity? Edit: They claim it was transmitted via "bushmeat" wish is where a person may have been bit or cut while butchering a monkey. Hmm.
2. Why it had never occurred before the 1900s - Europeans, etc. had been going to African Jungles long before then (I mean...we were grabbing African slaves in the 1600s).
