http://www.cnn.com/2011/SHOWBIZ/celebri ... index.html

Quote:
The "Jersey Shore" star headlined an event Thursday called "Inside the Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi Studio" at the school in Piscataway, N.J., where 1,000 students heard her talk about fist pumping, her signature hair pouf and the "GTL" lifestyle she lives out on reality TV, the university confirms to PEOPLE. She earned a whopping $32,000.

Her fee was $2,000 more than what the university will pay Nobel prize-winning author of "Beloved" Toni Morrison, who is booked to speak in a 52,000-seat football stadium at commencement in May.

Quote:
While Snooki's appearance was arranged by the student-run Rutgers University Programming Association, which uses mandatory student activity fees included in tuition, Morrison was booked by university officials.

Speechless.

I saw something today, and since this thread sounds like a great "What's wrong with people today" place, I'll share it.

"Ok we aren't such things and birds are pretty advanced. They fly and shit from anywhere they want. While we sit on our automatic toilets, they're shitting on people and my car while a cool breeze tickles their anus. That's the life."

Those kinds of fees are typical, almost every public university uses them and they're totally out of control.

The CSU system's charter forbids it from charging tuition because it is supposed to be a public university system, but today, the "mandatory fees" amount to thousands of dollars per semester (room, board, books and equipment extra, of course).

A while back I was billed for a yearbook without even being asked and didn't know until the yearbook showed up on my doorstep with an invoice attached. When I went to the bursar to protest I was told it simply wasn't possible to opt out. The huge volume cost $75.

I have become incredibly cynical and jaded towards the higher education system (much more so than Jubbergun because I know it better).

The "GTL" lifestyle, which has been well-known to me for a very long time although I've not actually known that particular term until I read this thread, is pervasive and disgusting - the intense arrogance of these preening non-profit marquis who get paid six digit salaries for looking cool and talking the talk. They think they live on cloud nine because they carry themselves with their noses to the moon and do what you call "GTL" as the whole of their expertise.

Here at Umass Boston we have paper and equipment rationing: instructors are permitted three sheets of paper per student per semester for funding reasons. This is totally unrealistic and unworkable, so in practice, it's an open secret that professors steal and embezzle huge amounts of paper from each other to keep functioning day-to-day. There aren't enough mobile computers to go around and professors cannot bring their own to classes. Again, budget reasons are why insufficient quantities of equipment are provided. Meanwhile the university pours huge quantities of our "fees" into PC programs and self-aggrandizing bullshit that benefit almost no one because of what you described.

The American university system is a racket and a charade. Nothing more, nothing less. A racket, and a charade.

Aestu of Bleeding Hollow...

Nihilism is a copout.

I graduated from Rutgers. Our commencement wasn't in the stadium. Guess they're shaking it up.

Also, RUPA throws money out the window and everyone knows about it and hates them for it. Not that a $32000 speaking fee is any more egregious than whatever the football coach makes.

Seems like a waste of money to me, but on the other hand the cost per student is only about $0.82.

Out of curiosity I took a look at my fee breakdown. For the current semester:

Tuition and Fees Amount
Athletic Building Fee $39.14
Athletic Fee $90.68
Bus - Late Night Service, Grad $7.46
Bus Pass Fee - Graduate $84.15
Energy Retrofit (grad) $6.88
Food Bank $2.01
G-Opirg--Graduate $5.97
Grad Association Fee $32.71
Grad Studies Bursary Fund $2.62
Radio Gryphon--Graduate $2.50
Student Services Grad $49.84
Student Health Service Fee $24.00
St. Volunteer Connections-Grad $1.10
Tuition Graduate Cdn $2,072.00
University Centre Fee $12.96
Guelph Res. Centre for Gender $1.80
============
Total $2,435.82

The only things I mind paying are the athletic ones (students get "free" access to gym facilities, but I never use them and I don't think I should be forced to subsidize collegiate sports).

While I agree that higher education has become a system that exists purely to milk student and the government, it is important to note who is paying. Snooki's money was assigned by the students, not the college.

I was going to say something, but then I thought about consequences, and so I'm not going to say it.

So instead, Conway Twitty everybody:

I never minded paying athletic facility fees. Ohio State's gyms were all fantastic, and were open to all students to use. Physical fitness is something everyone should be committed to (and I'm not talking about meat head protein pounding morons...I'm talking about basic health). If you aren't using them, it's more on you than anything else.

You don't need a gym to stay fit. In addition to walking to the lab every day, I run at least twice a week. It doesn't cost me anything.

Laelia clearly goes to a secret magical university for wizards. The mascot is a gryphon, the president of the university is named Alastair Summerlee, there's a cool clock tower, and their motto is "to know the causes of things."

I'm on to you.
