Because GPAs are the exact same thing as money.

No, it's the kind of analogy morons use to keep from directly understanding the issues.

This isn't an analogy. Sneaking up on kids during trick-or-treating and asking them if kids with a van full of candy should give some of theirs to other kids with less candy would have been an analogy.

This is a circlejerk since they linked things people feel strongly about to their own agenda, got the answers they want, got semis, and ran with it.

(PS: Didn't even bother watching the video past the first 5 seconds, since the first thing I saw was "DEMOCRATS" and I knew exactly what kind of video this would be)

I wouldn't mind at all. Grades are typically distributed normally, and redistributing grades would just tighten the distribution (ie. move everyone closer to the mean). Since grades are just a ranking system, the people at the top would still be the ones getting scholarships and postgraduate admission, while those at the bottom wouldn't really be better off. This is the main flaw of the analogy - nobody would actually be better or worse off, since actual grade numbers are meaningless, while someone who lives on minimum wage is helped considerably by real world taxes. The analogy also ignores that taxes are not simply income redistribution - everyone gets something from them, whether it's national defense, unemployment insurance, or infrastructure.

I think the analogy is fairly valid. Grades and incomes are both "reap what you sow" outcomes. Once you start balancing out the grades so that everyone gets the same thing, the only motivation the high achievers have to keep achieving at a high level is to keep the low end of the curve from dragging their average down. It has been historically shown that when you "equalize outcomes" that eventually those who gained their income with higher levels of production stop producing at higher levels. There is no incentive do any more than anyone else because you're not getting any more than anyone else. The mean comes to be defined by the lowest common denominator.

If you think that in a system of education like the one we have, where your choice of colleges and/or graduate programs are limited at least in part by your grades, that having your average pulled down because you had to "share" it with some mouth-breather won't make a difference, the only person you're fooling is yourself.

If you think that a tax hike to 40% or even 60% is going to make the slightest dent on wealth disparity in America you completely fail to grasp the reality of the dispersion of wealth in this country.

Yeah, I'm sure Lenin said something similar, only in Russian so it sounded cooler, and look how that turned out.

The thing you don't realize is that when you start hitting "the rich" with the tax hammer, they start putting the money somewhere the hammer doesn't reach. They start zipping up their purses and ride out the storm. Now seeing as how they "have all the money," if they're not spending any of it, where does that leave the "little guy?"

You'd do better just calling me a communist instead of showing a real lack of understanding of Russian history.

Right my fault, I forgot the rich got rich by spending all their money, just throwing cash at economically nonviable projects because they really, really care about the little guy.

When Straw Man gets back, tell him that no one said "the rich" got where they're at by "throwing their money away" at "crap projects." You're complaining that they hold a majority of resources, and your suggestion for fixing that is to influence them into hoarding those resources. Obviously you realize how stupid it is when it's pointed out for you, or you wouldn't have to resort to comical exaggeration of what was said and follow it up with a herp-derp attempt at wise-assery.

I don't care if "the rich" don't care about the "little guy." I do care that people are suggesting we buttfuck our economy just so they can get even with The Man. This idiocy only ever leaves your desired target exactly where they're at or enriches them, while the people you're allegedly concerned about get fuckerized.

1) Raising taxes wouldn't force them to hoard money.
2) Are you seriously implying that trickle-down economics works? I mean, we've been booming since the Bush Tax Cuts and all.

EDIT: This is a perfect example of the "lottery mentality" that Tuhl was talking about a couple threads back.
