Back story...in the NBA, a few weeks ago, Kobe Bryant got fined $100,000 for calling a ref a "Fucking fag" from the bench after he was issued a 2nd technical foul that he didn't agree with. The TV cameras caught him saying it very clearly...and GLAAD threw a fit. Kobe had to apologize and was fined by NBA as a result.
http://sports.espn.go.com/los-angeles/n ... id=6344596Last night, Joakim Noah (a player on the Chicago Bulls), was sitting on the bench and a fan sitting a few rows behind him was taunting/verbally abusing him. Noah got pissed and turned to the fan and shouted a slur at him (something along the lines of "Fuck you faggot." or something) which the cameras caught him saying. Noah has since apologized, and has had a meeting with the NBA brass. He's going to get fined for it for sure.
http://www.tmz.com/2011/05/23/joakim-no ... iami-heat/I then read this article where Noah's teammates defend him in a way...saying how fan verbal abuse can be too excessive at times and they aren't held accountable (the fan may have been dropping some racial slurs against Noah, or talking about his sister/mother/whatever or something)

1. Is the NBA/GLAAD/everyone being far too politically correct here? It's basketball, it's a tough game...there's going to be emotion, trash talk, cursing...should NBA players be fined like crazy when the camera just happens to catch them saying it? If you know men, you know that this word can be thrown around a lot in competition, and elsewhere (I lived in a fraternity in college...a common greeting when someone entered a room would be "what's up fags?". Consider FUBU forum mod titles etc. etc.)
2. What about fan culpability in the 2nd incident. Fans say some pretty outrageous things. This is obviously a fan who is rich enough to get seats just behind the visiting team bench, does that entitle him to just say whatever he wants to a player? If the player responds back with "Shut the fuck up" or whatever...and it happens to get caught on Camera, they are then fined?
3. Where do we draw the line? At the end of the day, these NBA players are humans...humans have emotions...should they be expected to never curse, never get angry, never respond back when they are being taunted or get a bad call in a close game?
