Recently, it was said, the International Monetary Fund was hacked.
Trot out the usual suspects.

From most to least probable:
1. China
2. The US
3. The angry Irish or Greeks
4. The "anti-establishment movement"

#4 is particularly interesting because they have quietly been growing in strength, numbers, visibility and legitimacy over the years. Within a few decades, I believe they will be a serious political force. If this seems ridiculous then consider that many of the most influential political movements of the last hundred years started out as nothings but rapidly gained strength because they offered ideological programs to deal with the issues of their time that the current establishments couldn't. Where were the Communists or Turkish Nationalists in 1900? The National Socialists in 1920?

But it doesn't look like it was #4. #1 is the leading candidate as to who hacked the IMF. While that's definitely a strong possibility, I think there's another possibility that's been overlooked:

The US is in a weak financial position. I remain strongly convinced that the last leader of the IMF, a French pro-Europe man, was entrapped or framed so that he could be removed and replaced by someone more friendly to American interests - so that the IMF won't downgrade the US's debt, which would result in higher interest rates on the federal debt and could be just enough to trigger a general meltdown of the federal government's finances and the economy at large. Our entire way of life, unsustainable as it may be, would come to an end.

The excuse that he had a prior accusation doesn't convince me. Accusations are just that, accusations, and it's entirely probable that "accusation" was merely a pretext for future entrapment. The fact that yelling rape seems to have become a uniquely American way of dealing with problems (Qadafi, Wikileaks) makes the pretext even more suspicious.

All the more that it now comes on the heels of both the IMF wading into the federal debt controversy (something they have never done before) and new controversy. It is completely implausible that the IMF attempting to influence American policy would go unchallenged. The US had to do something - and they did.

Anyway, my conspiracy theory is that what actually happened was that the US decided to trump up this alleged hacking as a way of manipulating the political atmosphere surrounding the selection of a new chair - to use fear of China as a means to encourage the Europeans to support a new American head, or at least reduce their opposition. At the very least, it serves to change the current dialogue strongly supporting an EU or BRIC head.

The thing is though...it's entirely possible that this hacking really was the Chinese. I think that is likely. But the thing is, the Americans and Chinese and other governments have been hacking each other, bugging each others' facilities, for decades. If a state hacking or bugging of sensitive areas made front-page news every time it happened, the news would start on page three every day for years on end. It's an open secret that mutual bugging is just business as usual - Wikileaks makes that clear.

So although the Chinese are probably responsible for the IMF hacking, the real blame, for blowing the cover on the thing, for making a big deal out of what is really business as usual, and the practical effect of what would otherwise be a routine intelligence action, goes to the Americans.

Gonna say this was Anonymous mostly because they made the threat against the President or someone high up to resign or begin to dispersing money equally. Relatively certain a threat was made to them in the form of an operation ______. None the less, following the logic of the internet now a days it's either Russia, Koreans, or the Chinese.

Wasn't there just a bunch of arrest that the authorities of various countries were saying were member of Anonymous?

Anonymous claims credit for the things they've done done, and this is bit much for them.

Anonymous declares attack against the International Monetary Fund over strict conditions imposed by bailout for Greece

WASHINGTON — Vigilante hackers group "Anonymous" declared Wednesday an online attack against the International Monetary Fund over the strict conditions imposed by its bailout for Greece.

A tweet from "Anonymous Operations," using the tag 'Operation Greece," called followers to amass on line at the IMF's website in an apparent attempt to overwhelm it and shut it down.
But it gave no time for the launch of the action, called a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack.

The tweet linked to a website criticizing the austerity plans imposed on Athens by the 110 billion euro joint European Union-IMF rescue.

The IMF said it was aware of the call.

"We are aware of the threat, and have taken appropriate action," said IMF spokesman Bill Murray.

Anonymous is a loosely knit collective of individuals who launch attacks aimed at troubling the online operations of its targets.

Targets have included the former Egyptian government, the Italian government, Iran, and companies which withdrew services to WikiLeaks like Visa and Mastercard.

In a typical DDoS attack, a large number of computers are commanded to simultaneously visit a website, overwhelming its servers, slowing service or knocking it offline completely.

Edit: supposedly the story was from May 25, and was centered around the state of Greece's economy.

wearing a black t-shirt with white printed words on it (whatever they may say) doesn't say much except, "avoid me!"

@aestu: i'm fairly certain that anti-establishment groups will have a hard time uprooting things nowadays simply because of the media.

Verily, I have often laughed at weaklings who thought themselves proud because they had no claws.
