For those of you who did not see the changes to the authenticators, you might want to check out MMO Champion. This is a conversation I had about it with a clueless GM.

[06/16/2011]
18:34 [Miahbell]: Was now a good time to speak to a Game Master about your petition Tankñspank?
18:36 [Tankñspank]: oh hello
18:37 [Miahbell]: HI Tankñspank 8)
18:37 [Tankñspank]: sorry I had another chat window open
18:37 [Miahbell]: That's fine. How are you today?
18:37 [Tankñspank]: well, confused, I am chatting with a guildie and friend from work and he says his game did not prompt him for an authenticator either
18:38 [Miahbell]: Aye. Some nice changes to the authenticator system went live today. I've emailed you all the changes, but I'll cover the one you're refering to right here for you.
18:38 [Tankñspank]: k
18:38 [Tankñspank]: is it chached now?
18:38 [Miahbell]: Question: Why didn't I get an Authenticator prompt this time? Answer: The Authenticator system will now intelligently track your login locations, and if you are logging in consistently from the same location, you may not be asked for an authenticator
18:38 [Miahbell]: code. This change was made to make the authenticator process less intrusive when we are sure the person logging in to your account is you.
18:39 [Miahbell]: There are a number of caveats to that statement, but that basically covers why you did not get prompted to enter your code today.
18:40 [Tankñspank]: Ah, ok, but what if I liked it being intrusive so I know it was me logging in. I have a ton of time and money tied up in this game. I understand the new features and if there is no option for the old system I guess I will live. Thank youf or the quick
18:40 [Tankñspank]: reply
18:40 [Miahbell]: That's a good questions Tankñspank. This is the first interaction I've had regarding this new change. Please give me a few minutes to find an answer to that for you.
18:40 [Miahbell]: I'll be back soon 8)
18:40 [Tankñspank]: k cool
18:42 [Miahbell]: Question: Can I turn the extra security of the [Battle.net] Authenticator on and off as I wish? Answer: Yes, you can do so through your Account Management page using the serial number on the back of the [Battle.net] Authenticator.
18:42 [Miahbell]: I'm guessing you could enable to older option through there. I don't have access to an account with an authenticator on it right now to double check though. Are you going to play around in Account Management right now to see, or try that later?
18:43 [Tankñspank]: Well, i do not want to turn it on, I want it to ask for a code every time I log. If my computer became comprimised, which it wont, but if it did the authenticator is suppose to stop people from being able to log in. If I got a keylogger on my home pc my
18:43 [Tankñspank]: 2 accounts, tons of gold, and 5+ years of game time could be lost in an instance.
18:44 [Tankñspank]: And yes, I will be around for the night as well as checking the account page for options
18:44 [Miahbell]: I hear that Tankñspank. Ok, please do look over those option. If you don't see an option to have it ask you everytime, let us know as soon as possible. If that's the case, it's an oversight that needs to be addressed in my opinion.
18:45 [Tankñspank]: k cool, I will take a look and see if there is anything on the cs forums as well
18:46 [Miahbell]: Alright, thanks Tankñspank. We both learned something new today, lol. Did you have any unrelated questions for me at this time?
18:47 [Tankñspank]: No, I am good, thank you for the super quick reply. Also on the account page there does not appear to be a way to roll back to the old system, at least as of 2 min ago.
18:47 [Miahbell]: Hmm, since they just rolled this out this morning it could be that the update hasn't gone through on the page yet, but that's just speculation. Lets give it a day though and as I said, if you don't see that option, please do let us know.
18:49 [Tankñspank]: works for me, thanks again
18:49 [Miahbell]: Anytime Tankñspank. You have a great night and enjoy your gaming. You can let my bosses know how I am doing at [email protected] if you would like to (I would appreciate it).

I don't see the problem with the GM. That GM was awesome compared to most of the morons they have. But then again the morons so characterize the public face of the Blizzard team these days that's all we think of.

It's too bad.

I remember when wrath came out and I was leveling with everyone else. My group got stuck in HoL, we could chat but everything else was frozen. The GM had to ask me what zone HoL was in, I was very disappointed.

I can understand a GM not knowing all about this yet. There probably isn't an option for it to always ask you, blizz just assumes they know what everyone wants. If I still played, I'd want a prompt every time as well.

Basically this. If it's coming from your usual ip block, then they'll let you slide in with just a password. If you log in from another location, it will prompt you.

If someone has your password, they'll also need to have an ip in your block.

Aren't you in tech, Baneleaf? What's so "horse shit" about that?

I skimmed so correct me if I'm wrong but

How is someone going to steal all of your pixels from a different computer when they HAVE to have the authenticator?

The way it works is, say I only play from my home computer then ONLY my home computer won't have to punch in the authenticator code. If I log in from a different location I'll still have to do it.

The only way I see this being a problem is for people (kuwaitslol) who only play at LAN centers.

All in all, I agree that you should have an option to enable an authenticator prompt everytime because that's why I have it. Blizzard for some reasons like to try and fix things that aren't broken and completely remove the option to use an older (possibly better) option. It's not till after the QQ floods in do they stop to think about it.

Edit: Damn you Tehra.

Only have to verify that you're really you if your IP changes...where have I heard that before now?

Oh, that's right, RIFT came up with that one. Best idea theft since achievements, Blizzard.

Whats "horse shit" about it is I dont want the system to remember where I log in from and bypass asking for an authenticator code, thats the whole point of an authenticator is to keep your account safe. Their system has actually been tracking IP log ins for a long time. I took my mom to a hospital about an hour away for ankle surgery. When I logged in on their wifi I had to go to the account page and change my password because my account got flagged for logging in from an IP that was not the normal one I use.

So basically, the system that they've had for years, after applying it to the 2 part authentication scheme (something you have & something you know) by substituting "what you have" with "your home ip" is a horse shit concept? Doesn't what they've just done make your life easier when you log into another location by asking you for your authenticator?

I hope you understand the concept of the 2 part authentication system has not been compromised by what you think is occurring, since it's not any less secure.

I guess you haven't read that your precious token can be cloned.

edit: Speaking of precious, consider the inconvenience of having to unlock your account after having the audacity to play WoW in a hospital instead of actually tending to someone who needs the attention a minor karmic retribution.

Baneleaf's concern is that malicious software could compromise his computer and take advantage of the lack of re-authentication to allow a would-be hacker to spoof a connection to the servers through his own connection, allowing the hacker to log in unimpeded.

I don't know enough about network security to know how rational a fear that is.
