Answer is 2. Anyone who has any other answer is stupid uneducated and wrong. PEMDAS is universal mathmatical law.

The answer can be 2 or 288. Using grade-school arithmetic (PEDMAS) and assuming implied multiplication is the same as explicit multiplication the answer is 288. However, implied multiplication is often understood to take priority, in which case the answer is 2. The question is a troll though, no real math question would be written like this.

did you all not learn PEMDAS in middle school

Ya, but PEMDAS/PEDMAS is a stupid mnemonic. The D/M and A/S are both interchangeable, but the mnemonic makes it hard to remember that. It's much better to rewrite any divisions as fractions and subtractions as negatives, which makes following the order of operations easier and makes the left-to-right rule unnecessary.

PEMDAS

parenthesis / exponentials / multiplication AND division / addition AND subtraction

Granted, that's all you'll ever do for real problems. I don't think anyone who's ever taken calculus (or shit, Algebra 2) will dispute fractions/negatives being superior. This isn't a real problem though.

And some people spell "through" as "thru", but that doesn't make it English.

The point of the order of operations is that it's universal and consistent.

48÷2(9+3) = 2
48÷2*(9+3) = 288

Agreed on trick math.

The point of this troll question is that it's not that simple. If I saw an equation "z=1/xy" on an exam, I would be 99% sure the prof intended it to be interpreted it as z=(1/x)(1/y), even though strict adherence to PEDMAS would yield z=y/x. In the real world, implied multiplication is often treated as higher priority, and insisting that grade school rules are the only way to interpret mathematical notation is just pedantic. What matters is being clear, and this question is not clear.
