Instead of going on a bender for your 21st birthday, do what I did and buy a really expensive bottle of alcohol instead. I got a 21 year old Benromach after talking to the head of the whiskey department for a hour (the dude goes to Scotland to taste whiskeys to sell in his store) and it was honestly the best $125 I've ever spent.

I only crack it open during thanksgiving and christmas.

Oh, I'm not going on a bender.

We're going to another high end resturant, doing a giant tasting menu paired with a full flight of wines :X

Forget that, weekend long bender.

That is more than acceptable.

I'm just glad I'll finally be able to legally drink in a month and a half, which means WINE TASTINGS, yesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

You're not supposed to swallow at wine tastings anyway.

I don't like the idea of tastings. It just seems too pretentious. Talking about a nice drink with a couple friends who also appreciate it is one thing, but making it an organized and formal event just ruins it for me.

I don't enjoy wine or other alcoholic beverages, but if I did, I'd definitely agree.

Being able to acknowledge which products are of higher quality is different than standing around in a room with a bunch of wannabes trying to one-up each other on wine trivia. If we were talking about people with serious culinary/winemaking backgrounds and people that actually know what they're talking about, that's one thing. A bunch of middle aged nobodies bickering about something as entirely subjective and personal as taste is another thing.

People don't make incredibly complex food and drink so they can be nitpicked. They're made to be enjoyed. Its sort of like how people get pissed off at fancy restaurants when their food doesn't come out within 5 minutes of each other. You're supposed to enjoy the experience, asshole. If you wanted quick food created exactly how your primitive tastebuds wanted it (read: well done), you should've gone to Applebee's instead of Aliena.

What makes the products from the countries you listed higher quality? As you say, taste and enjoyment are highly subjective. If someone enjoys a Czech or even (horrors!) an American lager more than a German one, are they automatically wrong? If someone in Russia spends a lifetime developing their vodka distilling skills, are they necessarily worse at it because they don't live in Poland?

A blend of generations of tradition, strict regulations, and the proper climates to create good products and ingredients (ex. hops can't be grown in warmer regions).

Not necessarily, they just haven't had a proper German beer yet. My first beer in Germany was honestly the first day of the rest of my life. Its really hard to explain if you haven't had a massive food epiphany like it before, but I imagine Tuhl had the same reaction when he had his first glass of wine in France.

Almost anything that can be grown in France can be grown better in California simply because the climate is better and there is more water.

Not to mention that CA's agricultural science is far, far ahead of France, and I'm not referring to genetic tinkering. CA produces many new and superior varieties of everything from grapes to cheese to roses to irises each year through conventional breeding methods. Withstanding the test of time is all well and good, but resting on one's laurels is contrary to honoring a tradition.

There are also generations of tradition in other countries than the ones you listed. Regulations seem irrelevant unless you think that people can only make fine foods if the government tells them how. Proper climates for growing ingredients are found in far larger areas than in the countries you listed, and where ingredients don't grow well locally they can often be imported without a loss of quality.

That's a product of you thinking that German beers are superior. If you had thought that Czech pilsners were the finest beers ever produced, your first glass of beer in Prague would have had an equally mind blowing effect. There's nothing wrong with thinking like that, and it probably adds to your enjoyment of the products you're snobby towards. It just isn't in any way objective, and pretending that it isn't pretentious is silly.

The thing is though... the government telling people how to grow crops and make food wouldn't be that bad. At least the laws would be on the books and the buck would stop at the voting box.

I am much more wary of NGOs and self-appointed "experts" assuming the mantle of compulsory authority without any sort of accountability. That is why I detest the French system where the self-appointed experts can destroy livelyhoods on a whim - even a factually wrong whim - with no legal recourse.

Ironically, many of France's most celebrated heroes today were people who stood against those same such institutions in the past - people like Pasteur or Curie or Eiffel.

And despite all that, their wine and cheese remains inferior. Shocking.

If this were true laws would not be necessary to protect consumers against their inferiority; superiority would sell itself.
