depending on how you do your order of operations, you get either 2 or 288

48/2(9+3)
48/2(12)
48/24

it's only because it's tied to a bracket

if it had been 48/2*(9+3)

It would be 288

Brackets or parentheticals are only priority for the things inside the parentheses. The multiplication is simply a notation for standard multiplication.

It's a trick because you want to think the 2 is attached in some special way to the 12 inside (it makes me almost want to think it's an exponential) but it's just multiplication.
