The current most "accepted" interpretation is that wavefunction ψ is a mathematical method of calculating the probability of the location and state/motion that a particle will have in a system. (a system in this case is the quantum mechanics of an atom e.g. hydrogen)

This is because, according to the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, it is impossible to know both the location and state of motion of a particle in a system at the same time. What can't be calculated with certainty has to be calculated with probability.

In other words, the wavefunction describes your knowledge of the system. Isolation by measurement of a system causes collapse of the system, giving you a different value everytime regardless of the experiment being done the same. Matter has a wave-particle duality, but when observed it will be either a wave or a particle, never both at the same time.

This interpretation applied to Shrodinger's Cat:

ψ (dead| + |alive)/root of 2. There is a 50% chance that the cat will be dead or alive when you open the box, until then you don't and can't know.

Problem:

Quantum entanglement has been observed where separated entangled particles change states when one or the other is observed regardless of the distance between them. This allows for information to be transmitted faster than the speed of light, in violation of relativity. However, the particles themselves are still bound by relativity so they have to be in their places already for instant information transmission to occur.

One of the challenges of uniting quantum mechanics and relativity.
