So, the first Republican debate of the 2012 Election cycle was aired tonight and I watched it. Ron Paul was clearly loved but one person who stood out was a guy by the name of Herman Cain - a black guy who is pretty entrenched in running businesses. He's never held a public office and all of his experience is based in businesses; CEO of this, VP of that. I thought it was interesting how he admitted to not having the answers for some foreign affairs because he's not privy to classified information. What was great about his response is that he knew the importance of defining the goals, the interests to America, and a plan for success. It's almost like he ripped it right out of a Business 101 book. Also, he was very short and concise... not like Pawlenty and Santorum who were very verbose and didn't always answer the question. (I also didn't like Santorums little religious rant about God) Granted, Cain didn't always answer the question either, but he said he couldn't answer the question because of his lack of political experience; Pawlenty and Santorum would dodge questions altogether I felt. The fifth guy was a guy named Something Johnson... he appears to be pretty moderate and his performance wasn't very impressive... he was actually pretty distracting.

Sarah Palin, Donald Trump, Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee and Newt Gingrich didn't show up (although I'm not sure all of them are committed to running for the Presidents office, like Trump said he can't because of his show.) Still, the people of South Carolina in the little opinion group thingy after the debate seemed pretty pissed that they didn't show up. One guy said he campaigned for Romney last election but he's now not going to vote for him because he felt like Romney didn't care enough about the South Carolinians to make an appearance; that guy is now voting for Cain.

With this black guy being the clear favorite from tonights debate then how long until the Liberals start saying the Republicans are playing the race card. Granted, no one has ever heard of this guy so it's not like the Republican machine calculated their ideal candidate (like the democrats did with Obama) and pushed him forward. I'm sure we're going to see a lot from this guy in the coming year and I'm sure the left will try to Sarah Palin him in every way possible.

My thoughts: Paul and Cain are my favorites. I with I could pick and choose between the two to create my ideal candidate... but since I can't, it's a toss up. Based on what I know (and what little I know about Cain), and assuming Cain is a legit guy with no craziness in his past, I'd vote for either of them out of the five.

This isn't true. Trump could announce his candidacy but until the proper paperwork is filled out he is not a candidate. He could announce and continue his show without nbc being forced to give equal time to other candidates.

He won't run either way, this is just a publicity stunt.

Sarah Palin's biggest enemy was Sarah Palin, the left didn't have to do anything to sabotage her but let her talk.

Semi-related, but what do people think about the AV vote in the uk? For the unaware:

Pretty sure Paul is just about everybody's favorite.

Anybody with half a strain of reasoning has him at least in their "Neutral" pool.

Gary Johnson caught my eye, but I don't think he'll hold much chance this election. Basing that solely on the fact that I don't hear about him anywhere. But you never quite know.

You mean for Senate? Because people had definitely heard of him before he was running for president.

Very few in the country (those living in Chicago and fewer in Illinois) knew about him when he was a state senator or when he was a freshman senator in the US Senate. He had two years and no ground-breaking accomplishments in the US Senate before campaigning for President. The man was literally a nobody; as much as nobody as Sarah Palin or Herman Cain.

You're speaking in hyperbole when you say "the man was literally a nobody"

I was living in Ohio at the time he announced his candidacy for president, and I had heard of him LONG before then.

He gave the keynote address at the 2004 Democratic National Convention (so obviously those watching (a majority of democrats), and all the politicians there knew who the hell he was). This is when I first learned who he was.

He released his memoir Dreams from My Father in 1995. It was re-issued in 2004 (after his Keynote address) and became a New York Times best seller. Obviously some people where figuring out who the heck he was if thousands upon thousands of his books were being sold.

He announced his candidacy for President on February 10, 2007. After about 2 years in the Senate, and 3 years after he first got real exposure from the DNC and his book.

I'm sorry man, but I wasn't even super politically informed (and I was still a staunch republican in 2004) and I knew exactly who Obama was. Palin on the other hand, I didn't hear about her until McCain announced her as his running mate. lol.

I'm not going to sit here and say he was an old hat on the senate floor who had spent decades being well known for all this and that. However, a LOT of people knew who he was before he started running for president.

You knew about him when you were a kid because he'd come to your house several times a day with a prayer rug so you guys could all kneel and pray to Mecca.

What?

I knew about him because I did a short report on him for Black History month in 9th or 10th grade.

The guy wasn't well known. being more well known than "who the fuck is this" palin isn't much of an accomplishment.

"Well-known" is such a subjective thing. The fact is, he spoke at the DNC in 2004, so he was at least well known in democratic political circles (how the hell else could he have secured the support for his presidential run?). He also had a best selling book on the NYT before he was a presidential candidate, so he was at least well known enough to sell a shit ton of books about his life.

I knew about him when I was in high school (and I was a huge Bush supporter back in those uninformed days). I remember specifically getting in fights with my girlfriend at the time because she just LOOOVED Barack Obama.

I haven't seen the whole thing, but from the snippets I have seen, I'm going to go with Herman Cain. There's still too much negativity toward Ron Paul in the Republican party for him to have a shot, and all the other guys are either "meh" or too tied to social conservatism...and Mitt Romney won't be the candidate just because of the healthcare issue. I also think that if Cain gets the nomination, it's really going to be hard for Democrat pundits/politicians to play the race card when the "this is why the other guy is wrong" stuff starts.

I'm going to watch the Republican party slowly collapse like a flan in a cupboard.
