I've been cycling a lot this summer. Anywhere betweeen 300-500km/month since mid-april probably. Right now I just have a pretty entry-level road bike with an aluminum frame, mostly tiagra and some sora components. But the last couple weeks I've been like fuck it, going to buy some clipless pedals and shoes, and a road bike later in the year. Most likely going to buy the Bianchi Sempre Veloce.

I miss biking in Sacramento.

We had a really lovely 36-mile-long bike trail. My onramp was at Mile 13 and the trail led all the way to downtown Sacramento in one direction and the Sierra Nevada foothills in the other. You could see golden eagles, rattlesnakes, king snakes, egrets, geese, deer, pheasants, jackrabbits, and the occasional mountain lion.

At Mile 25 there was a really nice fish hatchery with a hot dog stand out front and a machine that sold fish food for ten cents a handful. You could throw it in and watch the fish frenzy, or watch them jump the ladder during spawning season.

At Mile 6 was the Sac State campus right down a minature version of the Golden Gate bridge leading down a ramp into a simple, elegant bike park. You could park your bike then walk 100m to the food court where there was an Indian curry stand right next to a creperie hosted by a French guy and his Algerian colonial.

I really miss that part of my life. And it deeply bothers me that due to neglect and greed those things might not exist anymore, or for future generations. If I ever become rich and powerful, something I really want to do is to buy up land to create things for people to enjoy. It is an extension of the will to power.

I don't bike here in Boston. I should get a cheap bike and start biking places again. Boston's a pretty good biking city. I'm really looking to get a cargo rickshaw. Maybe buy a baby carriage and rip out the seat and replace it with some bags and such.

I quit biking because I have a beach cruiser, and fucking Winchester is full of hills that are unpossible without gears.

Man, I haven't used a bike in so long. I've been running instead, but cycling always felt so much more leisurely when I did it.

I just started dieting and exercising the other week in preparation for my Cali trip later this year (trying to lose about 20lbs), and part of my routine has been cycling. The only two bicycles we own are mountain bikes but I've been taking them on the roads around my neighborhood, trying to get at least 30 miles logged each week (in addition to weight training). I find cycling to be harder than I remember as a kid because I'm so out of shape, but I feel great after a nice late-evening bike ride.

I'm no pro, though. My last ride was 11mi and I was doing 11mph, according to some app on my phone. Not sure if that is a good speed or not, but I do hope my distance and speeds will increase as I continue exercising.

How can you use a bike with that kind of stance?

The last time I biked I was 15. We biked to the fireworks on the fourth of july. The seat was a little loose so each time I sat on the bike, the seat went upwards and hit me right in the balls.

I don't ride bikes anymore.

Montreal is pretty decent of cycling. Roads in general are pretty shitty though, so when you have 120psi tires it kind of sucks.

What app do you use? I've been using iMapMyRide and it seems pretty decent, at least it's the only one I've found with website integration so when you're done you can just upload your workout and route to their site easily then look back/track your progress on the web easily instead of a more-limited mobile app.

11mph is probably pretty decent for a mountain bike. I don't know, I haven't rode one for so long. I kind of want to take out my old one just for fun to see how big the difference is between road/mountain bike tires. The amount of resistance must be huge. I usually bike 15.5-18.5mph on my bike depending on the distance. Like last Sunday I did ~46 miles @ 15.5mph. I definitely ride way faster (and further) than I could at the beginning of the summer though. I think one of the biggest things I noticed other than becoming more fit, is that I was probably always riding in way too high of a gear, my front chainring has 3 rings and I almost always used to be in the highest gear unless I was going up a hill and I was putting a lot more effort in to pedaling, now I am almost always on the middle chainring pedaling faster but with less resistance and I find it much faster. Gotta find that ideal cadence!

I bought a pair of clipless pedals + shoes + new chain/tuneup (chain was stretched from riding like 2000km, gears were all fucked up, rims slightly bent, cables not lubed forever, brakes not good, etc...) so tomorrow after work I'm going to pick it up with the clipless pedals and all ready to go. Preeeeeeeeeettyyy excited about that. Probably going to not be able to unclip my shoes at some point and fall over like a boss.

Best thing about having parent's who live in Madison: It's the most bike accessible city in the US...which is really the only reason I don't have a drivers license at age 21. During the school year i live in a pretty small town, Mount Pleasant, MI, so anything i need there can be biked to get to. So yeah i do tend to bike about 14 miles a day, more on a good day, less if shitty weather.
