I'm not thinking for myself because I agree with things with which you disagree? The only thing sweeter than the irony of you arguing about 'free thinking' while basically saying we can only come to a conclusion different from your own is if we aren't practicing it is hearing someone who owes their livelihood to others telling us how much freer he is than we are. I may be under a yoke, but I exchange the hardship for my living, and come and go at my leisure. You, however, are at the mercy of your keepers. I make my own way on my own terms, while you are at best in a symbiotic relationship or at worst a parasite, waiting for the day when your host casts you off...or your deprivations kill it.

Your Pal,
Jubber

I might not have posted that particular phrase if my account had the name "Aestu."

In fact, most of those phrases include half the members of this board.

Physics. For everything else, that's probably accurate.

In regards to the original post, tenure exists primarily to attract people to teaching. If you're going to spend the extra year (and money) getting a Master's in exchange for a salary well below what you'd get in the industry, you deserve airtight job security. Running schools like businesses is the worst possible move in terms of reform. You might hold on to a couple humanities teachers that way, but anything that could even come close to looking like a science/math classroom will be a ghost town as all the young talent runs the fuck away.

To Eturnal's post, while I recognize the value of tradeskills and practical education, high school students don't have the first fucking clue what they want to do when they get older. Telling people at age 14 "if you want to be an electrician, build your schedule around it" will just force kids into making life decisions they don't have the maturity (or desire, or knowledge) to make at that point. Shit, if you'd told me when I was 18 that I'd go to law school, I'd have laughed in your face.

As for "libertarian-fu," do you want to know what deregulated schools look like? Here's a hint: they have them in China, and poor people can't afford it.

It's hard to explain, but physics is moreso learned by having professors transfer their tacit knowledge upon you by ways of teaching you how to teach yourself by doing stuff.

Find your own answers. And find your own problems, too.

(edit: regurgitating crammed expressions from either years ago or from yesterday does absolutely nothing whatsoever in the context of knowing how to study/research/understand physical phenomenae)

Cool. You ever apply for a job working with electronics, civil engineering, nuclear science or lasers, you go ahead and tell them, "I'm not into all that math and textbook stuff, I'm more into METAphysics".

Because, you know, those things totally work because of "tacit knowledge" and not "crammed expressions about physical phenomena" like light, particles, electricity and gravity.

Math can be looked up. Problem?

My post was about learning the methodology and gaining an understanding so that you know how to theorize new phenomenae/particles and/or know how to look for them in raw data.

edit: that, and knowing 'how to math' is more than plugging numbers into equations.

Memorize this:

Can I get an 'I was wrong'? It's okay, everyone is wrong very often.

edit: I appear to have been wrong, I have this one memorized:

Code:
\Delta p \Delta x \ge\frac{\hbar}{2}

Many biology concepts from 50-100 years ago would be incomplete or wrong. But I wouldn't want to see you teaching Bio anyway because you don't understand it.

This post is directed at his highness King Aestu of wherever draenai come from.

So to prove your point about the superiority of metaphysics, you copypaste a wall of equations out of a book. IN GREEN TEXT!

The plural of "phenomenon" is "phenomena". It's Greek, not Latin. If you're going to talk like a pedant, learn to do so properly. You don't need to speak the language, but you ought to at least learn the elementary terms of your field.

You can't discuss, so you make an ass out of yourself with assumptions (it's TeX between [code] tags to preserve indentation) and focus on spelling and grammar to divert.

I'm not sure why I clicked 'display this post', I knew it would lead to diarrhea as usual.

edit: and of course the meaning of my post went whoooosh, so let me translate it for you:

It would be silly to attempt memorizing this.

Pasting two pages of random formulae in green text has no relevance. Talking about a field in vague - and incorrect - terms certainly does in the context of intent is to define the field. The implication is, you don't know what you're talking about.

Why did you bump this thread anyway?

See the edit, fucking moron. (I'm not in the mood for uneducated dunning-kruger victims tonight)

(And I'm going back to The Void since any actual discussion here gets derailed into silliness, stupidity and attacks by his majesty the troll)

Ah, profanity. You are so clever!

That's true of any field. You can't memorize a cookbook or manual or what have you. All fields of learning, however, still revolve around internalizing concepts. Physics isn't special as such, nor is the abstract nature of all learning a basis for nihilism, denying the existence of objective truth.

Anyway, why did you bump this thread? Chicks at the bar not responsive enough to the "hurp durp I'm a physics student" routine?
