Was asking myself the same. D:

I thought you were home-schooled or private school, am I mistaken? I obviously don't think this would negate the potential for bullying, but I do believe it's much more prevalent in public school settings, and much less likely that teachers / bullies will be held accountable.

I honestly think 'ignore the bully and they'll go away' is the worst thing you can tell a kid. I don't think it's true in most cases, and if it is true, I think it just results in kids internalizing the anger and frustration and that's how we end up with school shootings and high suicide rates among teens, growing increasingly higher and occurring younger and younger over time.

Ignoring the bully doesn't work, going to teachers and guidance counselors typically exacerbates the problem, engaging in physical violence to defend yourself and to take a stand only gets you in trouble, or you get the shit beat out of you.

I think all too often schools focus on the 'problem children' who are bullied, and try to paint them as 'unable to fit in' and therefore project the blame onto them, as seen in Aestu's case and further reinforced within this thread:

how to survive high school

Schools should be places to learn, not factories to produce citizens. And that's the core of the issue. Anyone who is 'too different' is ostracized, and this tendency is institutionalized from the students to the teachers, from the ground up.

Citrus? Squash? Irises?

I don't have any citrus trees in my yard, though my sister does. My dad grows a few tomatoes and things of that nature. But I live pretty much ON the beach and my front lawn is sand with some crab grass on it. it's really hard to get anything to grow, and it's so fucking hot here half the time I don't even want to go outside to get in my car for groceries much less bake out there.

I look at it the other way around. I absolutely believe that schools should be factories to produce (skilled) citizens. I believe that it is the place of school to impose the national social model.

If schools were not factories to produce citizens, then they'd be getting into the dangerous realm of nihilism and law of the jungle. Factories build to specifications and so should schools. What do you have without specifications? "Personal preference". Well, whose? Based on what? Surely not kids who have no power and can't make informed decisions. So what that really becomes is the mess we have now with special interests and vacuous PTA types doing as they please...a lack of specifications turns into "some people's" "preference".

I don't mind admitting that my experiences at the Quaker colony have done much to shape my dismissive attitude towards liberal (philosophically speaking) schooling.

In life, the ideal is, everyone ought to be equal before the law and share the rights and responsibilities of citizenship.
Citizenship is a one-size-fits-all institution and therefore school should be as well.

The flip side of that is, if the national social model, or the way in which it is being imposed, excludes large numbers of the best and brightest and disincentivizes boldness, assertiveness and critical thinking - qualities a free society needs to thrive - then that's a problem, either with the social model, or the way in which it is being imposed.

I recommend mint, bay leaves, and succulents.

You could just pay a few poor kids $2 an hour to carry around a giant parasol and fan you with palm fronds. I'm serious. Give the kids some spending money and something to do, and you get to pretend you're some sort of...I don't know what.

...I'll stop now.

I respect your thoughts on the school system's role, and I think you presented them well. I think we can both agree that a definite problem exists when the school tries to fulfill both roles.

At this point in time, if producing reputable, upstanding members of society is the intended effect, the school systems are failing miserably.

I also believe that if educating children is their goal, the school systems are failing miserably at that front as well.

I think being educated goes hand in hand with being an upstanding and contributing member of society, just as a lack of education goes hand in hand with delinquency and apathy.

Nope.

If you tried bullying at the schools I went to, you'd just look like some idiot acting out something they saw on TV. That was enough of a deterrent, and there was pretty much 0 bullying.

I was lucky enough to be born into a wealthy family, got everything I could ever want so long as I kept up my grades and did my chores, made a bunch of friends including one core group of friends (we are still friends to this day, and still live near one another). I was made fun of once for bringing my Pokemon cards to school once, only to have the guys try them out and buy cards for himself the next day. Got into one fight because someone ripped up my quiz after I blocked him from cheating off of it. One-hit KO, I felt like a boss. Other than that, I was well liked, considered a bright student, etc etc. Like I said, I'm one of the lucky ones. However, that doesn't make me blind to the situations of others, or worse, ignorant of them. In fact, I'm told that I'm a great person to talk to about problems because I can find a way to relate and truly understand situations that I have not personally been in. I'm also a great listener and secret-keeper. I pride myself on these qualities.

I'll post a pic of my house too sometime. Better yet, I'll have a pool party and you're all invited! For those in the MD/DC/VA area, you may have heard of a rich-and-snooty suburb of DC called Potomac in Montgomery County, MD. Big houses, bigger douches. I'd like to consider me and my family the exception, but admittedly, every once in a while we show that side (or at least my mom does).

Fanta <3

Yes, I believe I've told you you're a great person to talk to. I think at one point we were having some talk about stuff, and I made the comment that 'if you get treated like a monster and an asshole long enough, you'll somewhat assume the role'

I think this is very true..of many things.

Yes, and I was incredibly fortunate for it. When I was both rowing and shooting competitively, I had to deal with a lot of kids stuck in the public school hellhole. Even the 'popular' crowd were screwed up and had to deal with all sorts of intergroup bullying. Being the outlier made me a prime target for people to come talk to, and I learned a lot about politics and the dynamics of a high school without, thankfully, experiencing it first hand.

Just add me through other people, most of the people who post here should be able to tell you who I am. I don't want to post my email anywhere.

As for hanging out, I have no idea how any of those things. BUT STILL.

You're in Jersey right? Anywhere near some place called Cherry Hill? One of my friends lives there and I visit her from time to time. If you're nearby we should hang next time I'm up there. Or, you could come down here to the DC area and chill with the rest of us!

I'm an hour and twenty from Cherry Hill, unless I'm in NYC in which case I'm even farther. But I'll be sure to let you know if I'm ever in the DC area.
