Anyone recommend a good game that has something to do with civilizations or building cities?

I read that article about the 10 year game and I kind of want to do that.

i've always favored the Anno series to be honest. haven't played the newest, but personal order for me is 1701->1503->1404->1602

I must thank you for recommending those to me, love them to death. I'm not sure i'd consider them city builders since i feel like the city in Anno takes a back seat to the logistics / trade aspect. I suppose its all part n parcel though.

Steam says 394 hours of Venice played, but i don't think steam includes offline time so i think 1000 hours is much more realistic.

Also haven't played the newest one. Only Venice. I just have very little interest in anything which isn't in a medieval setting, and on the flipside i have inherent interest in anything which is.

i guess it does take a back side, but i still have a lot of fun with city building itself. be it just new layouts, or trying to go maximum jew and get as many people as possible with as few necessary buildings. in 1701, a friend and i worked for a while on some layout and got the absolute max amount of houses while only needing like, one cathedral, one university, etc. the amount of income you have is hilarious, but it takes a LOT of shit to keep the people happy.

the only thing that really turned me off in venice was the whole two civilizations thing. you always had to make a settlement in a southern and northern island, so why they made them both actual different civs made no sense to me. the population splitting thing between merchants/peasants etc i didn't really like, but it wasn't a big deal.

and now i'm going to go reinstall these games to waste more hours ;_;

Spacehunter can we be Steam friends so that I can stalk you and watch what games you play but never actually engage in conversation?

Yeah nah, you're right. I definitely short changed the city building there. <3 those games

Must try the others. All i know is Occident / Orient. Which yeah it does suck having to make sure you go nab a decent south island whjen you don't even need to really use it for a while. All i'd do is get it to 145 terrorists, have some spice production and i wouldn't have to touch it again until i wanted book production. Feels a bit unnecessary now that you mention it.

well, in every game you end up having a north/south island so you can have resources from each climate. i tried to do a game of importing stuff only from the opposite side, and even if you manage to have enough gold to do so, people just stop selling. always a disaster

Ahh gotcha.

Yeah buying sucks. I'm still working on this barren lands scenario thing where you have fuck all resources so you have to buy the majority of the things and sometimes they get all stink on you and stop selling big enough quantities of bread and wine. It really gives me the schpilkis in my genectagazoink.

I'm gonna have to source the other games somehow. I'd gladly buy them off Steam/GOG but they're not there. A pity.

I just started playing Civ. It's not very much of a 'city building' game, but it's definitely a game that could go on forever.

Just get Sim City 4 and go from there. Once your city is sustainable turn it on over night and let your wealth accumulate. If you want up and find a disaster destroyed your city, don't save and just try again. :P

Last time I played SC4, it was so buggy it was almost unplayable, especially regional deals.

I thought I remember reading from some E3 coverage that the new Sim City 5 will have an always-on DRM. The selling point of this is to actually have some real interaction with your neighbors in the way you do trading between cities. I think this was attempted in a previous game (SC2K?) but I don't remember it working so well, if at all.

All SimCities siince SC2K have had neighbor interaction. In SC2K, neighbor interaction merely played a non-interactable role in defining what was called SimNation, the coefficients influencing migration and economic growth.

There was, however, an obscure release off SC2K called SC2K Network Edition, which was in fact fully multiplayer. Because of the primitive state of network gaming, as well as the fact that SC2K-NE cost like $75 a box or something and had no spawning, and was so poorly marketed most players didn't even know it existed, it never caught on, and Maxis decided not to roll the NE functionality into the Special Edition release.

SC2K had no DRM in any form and did not even have a CD key (and was available on floppy).

SC3K had neighbor deals but no multiplayer (that I am aware of). DRM was a CD key.

My experience with SC4 was trying it like six years back. I could never get intercity deals to work right, aand I found the growth algorithms of the game really borked. I remember a lot of difficulty getting connections to line up on both sides of the map, and everything going bonkers whenever something was changed in a city, somehow altering the topography of the entire region.

I made an account on the EA site to download updates and content. Apparently, I said I was underage, and even after I would have long been 18 it still locked me out. Site accounts are unique per CD key so I couldn't make another. Thanks, EA.

Bottom line is, its BS. But you probably didn't need to be told that. Anyway, did they fix the economy/region bugs?

P.S. I think I will pick up SC2K-NE as a novelty.

If there was a large bug that was plaguing the game or with the interactions between cities then I never experienced or noticed it. If anything, I'm guessing I would've seen it as a change to the game mechanics and either found a way to adapt or simply shrug it off. I don't remember much about SC4 because it's been ages since I've played it.

I do remember the terrain issue you mentioned... where if you have two adjacent cities, altering the edge terrain on one will alter the terrain on the adjacent city. That was always balls retarded and I remember spending most my time terra-forming a blank landscape (for every city square) before ever committing to build a city. Eventually I discovered SCRACC but my interest in SC4 had long since vanished.
