Frets are for pussies

Bought a violin. It was only a hundred bucks and it's older than me. Was made in Western Germany and it seems in decent condition. It's certainly a change up, a good challenge. Playing guitar is fun, but I need a new musical hobby. I'm teaching myself how to play. A teacher would do me well, but I don't have the money for multiple lessons and most of what I need to know at the start can be learned online.

It sucks having to start over and hear myself sound so awful again. I thought about getting the trainer tape so I can know where the frets are but I thought that'd be cheating and I'd become reliant on it. Fretting with my fingers seems to be pretty easy when I'm just plucking the violin strings but when the loudness is multiplied with a bow it sounds bad.

Anybody else play violin/viola/cello/upright bass?

The bass guitar I played when I was in high school didn't have frets, but the first instrument I learned to play was the trombone, so I was used to listening and judging position.

Harrumph...two more 'marginal' skills I've allowed to lapse. At this rate I'll be useless in ten years.

I played my new toy for a couple hours today. It felt good. Felt good to play really awful . Flailed the bow around and played what was about half of the G major key. Can't fucking wait to play song of storms.

I've been contemplating picking up a budget cello or violin for a while now and teaching myself, but everyone I know who plays seriously has warned me off until I find a solid teacher, and music lessons are expensive, ffffffffffffffffff.

I really want to start singing again, but my schedule is so fucked atm, I had to drop my part in the choir I was a part of :[

I had to take band when I lived in NC so I learned trombone. My daughter was first chair saxaphone all last year and just convinced my mother to buy her a starter guitar on ebay.
