Belfs aren't that heavyset - I think you might do better if you tried the approach used by Renaissance artists and made your starting point the architecture and functionality of individual parts of the body, rather than trying to draw an estimation of the body as a whole. Maybe try imagining different variables as a gradient, just like in video games.
