Department Manager. I ain't even mad. It's not where I wanted to be at 26, but it's damn better than what I'm doing now.

I know most of you guys are students / in good jobs for the time being, but does anyone have any retail specific advice?

I'm pretty well versed in interview processes in general, but as far as retail management goes I'm a complete narb.

Mainly concerned with knowing what sorts of questions will be asked. I'm gonna be 15 minutes early and I'm gonna be wearing Polo / khakis (new job I'd wear a suit or sport coat)

I know those basics..mostly requesting others who have been through a similar process / experience share their knowledge.

(Also shamelessly attention-whoring because f u that's why)

Haha true that. It's for Inside Seasonal Department Manager. I get to deal with the utter hell that's known as "100 Days of Spring". In the home improvement industry, it's where we do like 80% of our yearly budget in 100 days. Seasonal is a big deal because in the springtime people do all kinds of landscaping projects, plus our sales stay high year round because the equipment we sell / inventory we keep is dependent on the weather conditions.

As I've said, I never worked retail...only fast food and at a theatre...so I don't think I can be of much help on the retail side.

I know you're well versed in interviews, but I like to watch myself type and hey I might have a tidbit that would at least be semi useful given how many interviews I've conducted over the years. ;)

1.) Always have a really good question prepared for the end. Either about the job itself (responsibilities, expectations), the company, or industry.

I generally hate when people ask "how do you like it here" or "what's your favorite part about this job" - asking something in depth about the industry itself is way more impressive. It shows "hey, this guy isn't just some dumb faggot...he actually knows some shit and wants to learn more. Especially since this is a promotion you're shooting for.

2.) Don't feel rushed to give an answer. Too many people just start talking about shit the second the question is asked, before they've even thought the question through, and they end up saying something terrible or giving some BS answer. Some of the best interviewees have been able to PAUSE and THINK about their answers. If you need more time, don't hesitate to say "good question, let me think about that one a sec" Better to pause for a second to make sure you have a great answer than rush through.

3.) Don't be arrogant. Confidence and arrogance are two very different things. If you go in there with this attitude "I'm the shit, you are a fucktard if you don't hire me" then guess what, someone might be like "well, douche, you aren't the shit, you ain't getting promoted"

4.) Social Media....have you googled yourself? Do it. Make sure everythings fine. Make sure your FB profile is private. Shit like that has sunk many a candidate.

But yeah, you'll be fine.

Good luck man!

You're in retail?

Quit retail.

I wouldn't worry. Be honest and straightforward and you will do fine. Your odds are good.

They nominated you at their initiative, no?

1.) Very solid advice. I have some idea of some of the things they'll ask. That is something I'm trying to get better at, but it's a good point.

2.) I'll do that tonight, for sure. My Facebook profile is private.

I applied for the promotion, they selected me for the interview out of a pool of applicants. I know that it's a pretty tightly contested position. Lot's of interest from our store alone. They are required per company policy to interview at minimum 3 applicants from our store. I'm liking my odds in that case, since I know we had a lot more than 3 people apply.

Be thankful you have a job. Just not too thankful since your employer is probably going to cut you down to part-time hours to avoid sending money to the government because of the ACA.

The only difference between John Schnattner and those other guys being vocal about what they're doing and almost everyone else is that John Schnattner and those other guys are being open and up front about what they're doing and why they're doing it.

Not at all. It's the same BS argument the entire right wing gives, that being utterly selfish is somehow justified or serves a higher purpose. He has no higher motive than greed for the sake of greed. Except, maybe, getting his name out there and making a big deal about himself.

And if you think that it's purely a personal view on his end, go watch the tug-of-war of Wikipedia edits by his paid lobbyists. The man is a stooge for the anti-American lobby.

The reason for the pizza promo nonsense is the same reason that the right wing has always tried to drag the level of political discourse down and remove any sense of gravity from political affairs. Their platform is such a joke that the only way to make it sound reasonable is to turn politics itself into a joke. Trying to contextualize life-or-death issues with pizza specials.

The way you form your ideas and argue points is living, breathing proof of that. When cornered by facts and logic you turn to the same antics you see on Fox, because in no other context can what you believe in seem reasonable.

Idiotic for the most obvious of reasons which is that the work has to get done. If the worker isn't working then neither is the business. The money isn't "going to the government", follow the money...it winds up in the hands of primary care physicians.

Again this is the America-hater argument. The alternative to the money going to govt, or physicians, as you like it, is it remaining in the hands of the very wealthy. The premise of Jubber's position is that others' greed will somehow pay off his own.

Never mind that Jubber has spent most of his life on government welfare getting fat (well, not fat - obese, actually) on taxpayer money, then blowing more taxpayer money on crack.

Anyway, uh, hope you get the job, React. I would be optimistic. Just be calm and simple.

You're aware that if Papa John's adds 14 cents to the cost of each pizza, they can cancel out the extra money that Obama's forcing them to spend on basic human necessities like health care, right?

Either that or don't give out 2 million pizzas.

Every government regulation on business gets passed onto the little guy.

This got much further than I thought it would before it went political.
