The only times I've ever found the Cruiser useful were as a last resort, when the enemy ship is is either very slow (e.g. Mycon) or low enough on crew where two quick missile shots can take it out before it gets in range. The relatively long range, seeking missiles are it's only redeeming factor. Once an enemy ship is in range though, it's usually game over. The Ilwrath tear them apart (except for the damaged one at the start of the game).
Would have been awesome if the Melnorme sold a speed upgrade for the Cruiser. But alas, not meant to be.
Glad to hear you're having fun with it again. I've only had the chance to play for an hour or two here and there, so I haven't been able to progress too far. The Pkunk were always a favorite, cheerful as they are, along with their free and reincarnating ships.
