Evolution is not competitive or zero sum. Being able to wipe out a civilization doesn't prove evolutionary superiority.

I don't think evolution applies in this case, but evolution itself is certainly competitive, almost by definition. I don't think you can describe the change in prevalence of a given allele vs. the alternatives any other way, and in the absence of population growth it's also zero-sum.

Not necessarily. If a population goes extinct because they're genetically maladapted, then yes, but I think in this case the maladaptation was cultural. It still can affect evolution because the alleles in the population were lost, but the extinction didn't happen because of evolution.

I figured not being able to survive an outbreak of smallpox would be an evolution thing, and not a culture thing.

It wasn't a genetic susceptibility to smallpox, as far as I'm aware, but a lack of previous exposure. I guess cultural wasn't exactly the right word (I'm not sure what the correct word is), but either way it wasn't a case of genetic maladaptation. The Europeans' guns also weren't genetically inherited, but they were a major reason they were so strong militarily.

Fitness in the context of "survival of the fittest" refers to the genetic adaptations of an organism for its environment. Genetic adaptations aren't relevant to the conquest of the Americas.
