So sad. Plans for yummy dining were dashed by my 2.5 year old needing to go to the ER for stitches. Perhaps tomorrow night :(

Ok. I did this. My food is very basic. This... this was not basic. It was probably basic for Indian cuisine, but...

First off, my wife looked up some restaurants around us. The first two were store front little dives in strip shopping centers. I could not bring myself to go in. One said Indian food and Chaat. Wtf is chaat? I'll look it up later. In any case, we arrived at the third place and it was actually a restaurant in a free standing building. Clean. Only one thing. There was not ONE car in the parking lot. I don't mean "not many" or "scattered". I mean not one. But we're up for something new, so in we go. Place is quiet. Several nice TVs scattered around. One waiter walking around like Lurch from the Addams Family. Nice guy, but let's just say that English is not his native tongue. Getting him to teach me anything about how to order would have been impossible, so I failed in this area. I did get him to teach me "Thank you". It sounded like "tumka goo". So, I said that to him.

We ordered: Appetizer: Veg Samosa - Ok. This wasn't too bad. A fried pastry stuff with potato, lentils, cilantro, a little curry. Served with a red sauce that tasted like BBQ and a green really spicy sauce that would probably power my car for a solid week.

Entrees: I took Battle's advice and ordered the mixed Tandoor. Waiter came back and said they only had chicken that was fresh. So, I had Tandoori Chicken. It came out sizzling in a skillet like fajitas with onions, bell peppers and lemons all over 6 pcs of chicken that were dark red. Served with rice. I expected spicy and hot from the look of it, but it was actually very mild, and I would probably eat that again. So far, I am unscarred. Until I tried my wife's entree of Palak Gosh. This stuff was like a chunky lamb stew. Heavy curry. I had one bite that whipped my ass. A little overwhelming for the wife, too. We wondered why the waiter snickered when she ordered this.

We had plain Naan and Garlic Naan, both of which rocked. Quitter was so right. Very good.

Desserts: We finished with Rice Pudding (really good), Gulab Jamoon (dumplings in a sweet syrup which was oookay) and Masala Chai (a very flavorful tea-delicious).

While we were worried about the lack of customers at first, every other customer who walked through the doors was Indian. We decided that they could easily fool us, but they probably couldn't fool those people. Overall, I won't be rushing back for Indian food, but I wouldn't be so worried about it if I had to go back. Curry is not my favorite thing, and you can't escape it as a backdrop smell. So, if I live through the night, I'll say my first GOOTHADS trip was a success.

tl;dr My trip for Indian cuisine came off better than expected, but I'm not in a hurry to eat Indian again soon.

I enjoy the smell of curry :( At work I'm right by the microwaves and someone cooks some curry every day around 11:45 I'm always like fuuu makes me so hungry.

I won't be able to participate in this, but a few weeks ago after admiring the work curry smell I went to a Carribean place for the first time, you can tell it's good because their website is legit as hell. Got a bunch of chicken roti's and brought them home for the family. They are unbelievably heavy for their size, I think they're mostly breading + chicken + potatoes + some kind of broth + curry + bunch of other spices, I ate 5lbs of roti that night and it was awesome.

I've been to 3 Indian places, 2 of them were meh would not be excited to eat at again. The other one was awesome and would suffer eternal firebutt to indulge. Naan is even awesomer if you get a plate like chicken balti or one of the many plates that are served in something saucy/creamy to dip it in. Maybe check out a place like chowhound for future adventurous food outings.

Tandoori chicken sucks. Most of the time I've had it its been amazingly dry. Get some Rogan Josh and some Vindaloo next time you get there.

Also, you should always order things from indian places a notch lower than you usually do for reasons like you said. Then again, you're old.

I'd do this, but my plate's full between sending bitches smiley faces, working, and brooding in my deep depression over the Germany-Spain loss to do anything this week.

Instead, I'm going to heckle from the peanut gallery vezir-style.

Honestly I don't recommend any Vindaloos if you're not fond of excess spiciness (man that word looks terrible but it's spelled right), since they're at the top in terms of spices. Lamb anythings with sauce are great because they tend not to make them sweet, which I've found to be a side effect when you order chicken.

Seekh kebabs are also good.

Still need to find some time to try Korean. I imagine there's noodles involved.

The middle of the 3 is really tasty. I have no idea what it's called and can't speak Korean though. I'll try and ask my friend that I went with what it was called though.

Edit: figured out what it was called through some googling.

Very tasty!

haha its all good, not everyone is into it - I'm immune to spicy, which kinda makes all restaurant Indian food taste bland.

Homemade is where its at. And I'm an amazing cook. Do I hear party?

I was wrong on two counts: I have NOT eaten at every restaurant here, and we DO have an Indian place and...get this...a BRAZILIAN place.

Fuck Indian food. Not even trying anything that smells like that.

I'll let you know how the Brazilian was later.

Is it a Brazilian grill? We used to have one up here, they just bring you slab after slab of meat from assorted animals.

/emerges from the shadows

I go out of my way to eat different cuisines from different nationalities, and I live in Chicago where the diversity of food is extremely abundant. Thus this challenge was more difficult for me, but I was able to pull it off on Wednesday night at a Korean BBQ place. My wife had been bugging me to go, and after my raid was canceled I said screw it, let's do this.

It's right around the corner from my house and called Cho Sun Ok Restaurant. No windows. Two thick glass doors. We walk in, and it's the two of us and about 25 Koreans. Not a lick of native English speakers in the joint aside from the two of us. We get a seat and bust out the bottle of wine we brought with us, and the waiter brings us a corkscrew and two rocks glasses. Confused by the rocks glasses, we look around and realize not one of the Korean families was enjoying alcohol with their meal. Mini cans of cokes all around. Great, we're already doing it wrong.

Without ordering anything (or even speaking to the waiter), we are brought 20 tiny dishes with various piles of food in them. Kate and I stare at each other. Are these spices for the main course? Ok that one is potato salad...um that one is (/tiny nibble) uhhh I don't know. It was sticks of something slightly firm. The rest are literally piles of mush, piles of coleslaw looking stuff, one had just cucumbers in it. One of them looked like lasagna but definitely did not taste like lasagna. So, not knowing wtf was going on, we just stare at the food, occasionally nibbling at one or another.

About 20 mins later the waiter comes back with a tiny skillet and a plate full of raw beef shingles. I call them shingles because i dont know what else you would call them. Hard (because they were frozen) flat, square pieces of meat. We saw everyone else frying up their beef in the provided skillet and followed suit. Pretty good actually..surprisingly good considering it was just beef. We mix it with some of the mushes from the little plates because we figured they had just brought the spices and mixers early. We left about 1/3 of the little dishes alone because they were weird looking and didn't taste good.

In the end we finish the bottle of wine to ease the awkwardness, pay, and leave. Almost zero conversation with anyone in the restaurant. Tons of strange stares. And we left hungry.

I think we did it wrong, but I wouldn't change a thing.

<3 boredalt. can't wait for the next challenge.

We definitely did it wrong. Next time, if there is a next time, we'll take one of the wife's Indian ex-students with us to enlighten us.

Also, good to have you along, sir. <3
