Starting this morning my computer has been reluctant to boot up. I hit the power button and the fans and hard drive start up and the case indicator lights come on, but then nothing happens. After turning it on and off about 10 times it will boot, and the BIOS informs me that my overclocking parameters were bad, even though I'm not overclocking anything. Any ideas of what the problem might be/how to diagnose it?

Humidity is at 90% right now - could that be causing a problem?

Possibly bad battery. That would explain why your BIOS settings are messed up until you reset it a bunch of times and get juice in the capacitors.

The CMOS battery? Do computers still have those?

Yeah, when the lights come on and the HD starts spinning but the computer doesn't boot it's usually the CMOS battery. There should be a jumper on your motherboard somewhere to reset the CMOS, or you can just take it out for 30 seconds then put it back in.

For some reason a similar thing happens on my dad's PC, two or three times it's been stuck in that lights-on-hd-started but not booting mode, then resetting the CMOS makes it work again.

It's pretty simple so that's what I would start with, then if it persists look at some other causes. High humidity definitely doesn't help computers, but I don't think it's too big of a deal unless it's constantly humid.

e: also, if you have a voltage meter, take a reading of the cmos battery to see if it's still good.

Resetting seems to have worked, thanks. If it keeps happening I'll check the battery. I also found an Arcade Fire CD that I thought I had lost while I was looking for my motherboard manual, so double win.

Now my computer is randomly hard locking/resetting itself. CPU temperature reads at 37-38 C, so I think I have a PSU problem :(
