The wife and I can go to DC one of these weekends but we can't walk around aimlessly in the heat because she's pregnant. Let us know if you got something in mind.

So, I didn't get a chance to make it to a Museum over the last two weeks but I did find my way to the US Marine Corp Archives building and my wife and I received a tour from a family member. (We plan on doing a Pentagon trip in the coming weeks so I'll post about that when we finally get to go.)

The Archives is really just the processing and storage area for nearly everything related to the Marine Corp. They have news paper articles and publications on the Corp., as well as journals written my Marine POWs, film of battles, book keeping records, maps and a lot of panoramic photos from the day. There are three sections to the Archives... one was a public area, one was restricted access and the other was a holding area.

The public area had a lot of artifacts of the marine corp like old uniforms, ammo carriers, medals and books. There also had a lot of pictures hanging on the wall of entire platoons and battalions being photographed in the late 1800s. They also had a flag on the wall that was recovered when the US retook the island of Guam in 1944.

The restricted access area is where they review all the material that is going into the archives. There were a couple desks in the office with about six people working on cataloging all the information. Maps are scanned and indexed in an electronic registry and books are reviewed - page by page - to ensure there are no notes written in the sides or letters/money hidden between the pages. They also had a couple boxes that had artifacts that had to be processed and sent to the Marine Corp museum. The oldest item they had was a map of Cuba, the Keys and the Yucatan peninsula that was dated to 1774. They also have a lot of publications stored in a vault that are of high value, like a first-edition book written and signed by Mark Twain. They have some texts that have been valued in the tens of thousands sitting back there.

The holding area is where all the donations are stored before processing. It smells pretty bad and most the valuable donations are locked in book cases but everything else is sprawled about... books, magazines, flags, journals, maps, etc. I found some journal in the pile that was written by some Marine but I couldn't read it. It kinda looked like it was a small notebook used to detail some recon or mission objectives.

No pictures available.
