food

9 food before building X
10 food before building X
etc...

edit:

* 8/9 – Pylon (scout if random)
* 10/17 – Gateway (scout if you have not already)
* 12/17 – Gateway (11/17 if you scouted late)
* 13/17 – Assimilator, Pylon (in that order, hotkey and rally gate to choke)
* 17/25 – 2 Zealots, Pylon (in that order, hotkey and rally gate to choke)

translation:

build a pylon at 8 and 9 probes
at 10 probes build a gateway, build another at 12
build assim at 13 probes
build 2 zealots and 2 more gateways at 15 probes (2 zealots makes it 17 food), then build your 2nd assim and a 3rd pylon

So I just match the things being built with the numbers in the top left screen. Makes sense. Thanks for the explanation. ;)

looks like

8/9 food you build pylon
10/17 food you build gateway
13/17 food you build assimilator, then pylon
17/25 you build 2 zealots, then pylon

You hear it a lot more with zerg. You hear things like 6 pool, 8 pool, 9 pool, 14pool/15hatch, etc.

Thats what those are, the food or supply rating when you build. It gives you something thats concrete to measure your build order/times against.

A zerg who 6 pools builds 0 drones. He starts with his 6, and waits until he has 200 minerals, and then builds a spawning pool.

Of course quite a lot of people have good fun with this sort of thing, but personally I like more open-ended gameplay.

Its not really about that.. its just about an effective way to start the game to set you up for what you want to do next. Of course no build order is best for every situation.. you should always make your own. But some of those are very strong, common openings. They're talked about and used because they are very effective and efficient. In essence, they are the end result of open ended play, followed by detailed analysis.

Yes, and the same could be said about chess. I understand how creativity plays into having initiative, insight, the ability to gauge opponents' intentions or knowing where to strike, but it still is a lot less open-ended than the sort of action I prefer. Not that I object on a fundamental level or anything.

Following the same build order every time, no matter how efficient you get at it, will get you stomped by every diamond player (and most of platinum) probably without contest.

90% of SC is about scouting out your opponent and adjusting accordingly. There's only so many things you can do that are optimal with the first few units of the game, you need to do decide what you want to accomplish at the start then use the optimal build for that, then it's all up in the air. Doing otherwise is like calling a warrior that sockets agility creative when he's really just bad.

And why are you looking up SC1 strategies?

I was looking at some build orders on the SC2 forums but I didn't know what the numbers meant or how to read it, so I went to one of the other SC2 strategy websites... but it didn't have a strategy section, so I clicked on SC to check their strategies... and I saw the numbers... and since it was the page I had open I linked it.

Day9 taught me what all those numbers meant. I love that nerd so much.
