So, today I got a brand new work computer. It's a very nice HP laptop..here's the thing, I had a perfectly good work computer until yesterday, when it was raped by the gayest virus ever created.
------------------------------------------------

I'm still not quite sure how I got the virus, but at some point I clicked on something that said "new update available for windows" It must have been disguised well, because I didn't even think twice before clicking. I'm dumb, but not that dumb.

Well what this virus does, is once you stupidly click on the windows update, it installs itself on your comp and takes over admin privileges. It then starts making your computer freak out every time you open a file by saying that file is infected. Then, there are various popups for some product called "Virusscan" that says "your computer is infected...click here to run antivirus software" It will also force open internet explorer and bring you to the antivirus software homepage.

The funny thing is, there is no actual virus (besides the bullshit executable giving you false error messages), so running McAffe, Norton, etc...will all come up empty. It can only be removed by a 3rd party computer or a complete wiping of the harddrive.

TLDR: Basically it's a virus that handicaps your entire computer in an effort to make you purchase its antivirus software. Ingenius, also infuriating.

Virus stories?

I had a virus once.

It went solely for my WoW account. Stripped my characters and took gold.

I recovered it. Nuked my harddrive, because I'm cool enough to have a backup.

Yeah, I could have given the comp to Best Buym they woulda fixed it for $200 and it woulda taken 3-5 business days. But, my boss was just like "meh, we'll just buy you a new computer"

How did you fix it Zaryi?

You nuke it, and use a backup.

This is a virus and a form of malware. We have to fight it all the time at my work because when we lock peoples rights down the cry to their department heads that they are being treated unfairly, so we rub it in when we have to fix their fuck ups. If you get what appear to be a virus wanting to install an antivirus program, what has worked for us is:

1. Combofix
2. malwarebytes
3. trends online virus scan

We use an enterprise version of a anti-virus program but you cant protect against stupidity. The best was when somoene turned the av off on a computer in our cable department so they could download a a movie burning program. Lets just say that computer has read only rights now and the user cant even install Itunes.

@ Azelma - If you check your task manager, you should see some executables in the list that are just random letters. I'd google unfamiliar executables. One of them will return a result about a virus and the links should tell you how to clean it. Normally, you'll have to boot into safe mode, remove the executable (and all instances of it), clean out some registry files and reset your internet security settings, etc.

Yeah, I downloaded and installed malwarebytes, didn't find anything when it scanned, which sucked.

The trouble with the task manager is that this virus won't even let you open it. The comp works "fine" in safe mode tho.

On my old computer, like 5 people used to use it. My little sisters crashed it god knows how many times and then mix in my brother and stepdad looking up porn or gore videos.

I got a virus that would just shoot she-male pop-ups at me. I'd be doing arena with my friend from Mexico and it's like
"Alright, I'm looking for the rogue."
"I think he's over here"
"I got him, going to blind the prie . . . I GOT SHE-MALES COVER ME!"
and that's when I learned how great windowed mode is!

Eventually, I just gave him remote access to my computer and he removed everything (he was a computer tech guy or w/e). He simply typed to me in notepad "Poor computer :( "

Now that I have my own computer, 0 problems!

Azelma, go into safe mode and run msconfig.exe - You can get to it by using the 'Run' option under Windows XP or the Search bar in Win 7. In msconfig, you should be able to look at the application startup tab. The virus or application is in there somewhere since it's auto-starting. Once you identified a startup programs that looks bunk, post the names of them here and we'll go forward.
