I didn't really look at the grades until just now. I just assumed he was talking about college.

I wish I could remember who called it. Jubber, perhaps?

I would agree that the teaching could be different/better, but personally aside from the one time it was taught in High School (my school didn't think we were stupid enough to need to be taught the same thing 4 times apparently), the prof did teach why it occured, a.k.a. the other side. I had an awesome Lithuanian prof who would teach the things as they flowed, I took every class I could with him.

We had two college courses devoted to WWII and Nazi-ism, the 'other side' was covered fairly in-depth in those courses.

Who gives a shit if you're tired of it or not? It's a huge part of history and a required part of your learning curriculum. You can't possibly claim you understood 100% of the impact of the holocaust from a 6th grade history class.

That's like taking a class about baseball and getting mad that you have to learn about more than just how to bat. Or bitching about having to learn human anatomy before becoming a doctor. "whatever man I took anatomy in the 11th grade I don't need this shit again" DERP

If you want control about the content of your courses, then you can major in history and select the content you wish to study as your classes become more specialized. Otherwise, you get what they say you get.

I realize the holocaust was an extremely significant event in World History, in general, and World War II, in particular. However, I'm with the OP here a bit. While I think the holocaust should be an important part of any history class that encompasses this time period, the holocaust gets a quadruple share of attention. Why don't history lessons of other time periods focus with the same fervor on the TWENTY to FIFTY MILLION Russians (and others) that Stalin wiped out? Or the genocide of many indigenous peoples in the Americas at the hands (and diseases) of the Europeans? Hell, look at what is happening in Africa, right now. There are many more we could include in this list that are equally horrible, if only we thought about them, or were actually taught about them with more than a passing "oh yeah, this happened, too".

Here is a good question: Why do we think this event gets so much more scrutiny than others?

Zaryi and I both agree the Jews are the money-grubbing bastards who are writing the history books.

1940 isn't all that long ago, it certainly feels that way when you're in high school, but it's still rather recent.

The extremely callous way people were simply processed is often hard to imagine. It's not that Germany had a high percentage of people who were mass murdering fuckheads, the society had to get to that point somehow. These people were murdering their neighbors and fellow countrymen. And look at Germans, they weren't that different from the Americans of the 1940s.

I agree though, Stalin's purges, Manifest Destiny, Darfur, these should get more attention, and in appropriate college courses they do. However in the limited scope of the high school history class, the holocaust is tragedy with the biggest impact and fits onto WWII (and how can you not teach WWII).

Also, the fact that our government refused to fulfill our promise to intervene in any genocides by simply not calling Darfur a genocide is shameful.

Famous scene in the UN where a US delegate or something was running around saying "DONT USE THE G WORD" reffering to what was happening in rwanda in 1994.

Yeah that was pretty shameful as well.

Sidenote: Paul Rusesabagina came to speak at my school. A friend of mine in the audience got in line to ask him a question, and when his time came asked if he could give the man a hug. There was a picture on the front of the paper of him hugging Paul Rusesabagina, it was great.

The turks vs the armenians, and to this day the turkish government denies it, and any academic who says otherwise is banned from teaching, books are banned, is issued threats and otherwise persecuted.

They made them march to syria and hired kurds to kill them on the way while the "guards" watched and/or joined in.

It was hitlers inspiration for the final solution.

I always thought it was funny how much we teach about the oppression and misdeeds and crimes of other nations and factions without ever touching on
the holocaust of the united states
