No matter how reasoned arguments are, it always comes down to name calling.

I think gays can serve in the military(they do) without prancing around screaming how gay they are.)

This is a stupid issue that is drug out way too much for no other reason than people want the homophobes to accept gay people for being gay.

If they start prancing around in the barracks, that isn't going to make them more acceptable to people who have no real reason to hate them in the first place. It's just more bullshit distracting people away from issues that actually matter.

But it's not about them 'prancing around the barracks'. It's about them being able to serve and not have to worry about getting court marshaled and dishonorably discharged because they're homosexual.

i'll just leave this here...

Quote:
Gay lovers: the ideal warriors

Is it surprising that some people began to propose taking advantage of the courage of gay lovers in defence of the city? In Plato’s Symposium, Phaedrus proposed the creation of an army of lovers, because men behave at their best when in love, and that no army could be better than one composed of lovers:

“No man is such a craven that love cannot inspire him with a courage that makes him equal to the bravest born.”

In about 378 BCE, this literary speculation entered historical fact, putting the notion to practical testing, when Georgidas applied Phaedrus’ reasoning to the creation of the “Sacred Band of Thebes”, a company of 300 soldiers, comprising exclusively pairs of lovers. Was Phaedrus right? Was the Sacred band successful?

You betcha!.

For forty years, the company was celebrated throughout Greece for their courage and military success. When at last they were overcome, fighting to the last man against vastly superior numbers, their conqueror Philip of Macedon, said of them that no man, seeing their valour, could possibly think their love shameful. (Now, note, that this was Philip of Macedon, whose son Philip II was himself not averse to a little man on man action, and whose grandson was Alexander the Great, conqueror of the world ,as far as it was then known - and renowned for his love of Bagoas).

Looking back some centuries later, Plutarch was able to record that he most war-like societies were noted for male love, and listed some famous heroes who were also known for the men they loved: Meleager, Achilles, Aristomenes, Cimon, Epaminondas, and Ioläus (companion of Hercules, and at whose tomb same sex lovers were said to make their vows of commitment.)

In short, for the Greeks, ideals of male were so firmly rooted in their heroes, that it was seen as a sign of real manliness. After listing some of the most famous, from every category of leaders and thinkers, Crompton observes:

This is an astounding record, including most of the greatest names of ancient Greece, during the greatest period of Greek culture. For many biographers, for a man not to have had a male lover seems to have bespoken a lack of character or a deficiency of sensibility.

But take heart, Americans. Even if you (officially) have no gay soldiers, every time you sing the Star-Spangled Banner, you are indirectly singing in praise of homoerotic relationships. The tune is based on a an English drinking song, “To Anacreon in heaven.” Before his poetry was lost to posterity, Anacreon was the most celebrated Greek lyric poet of male love.

No one's saying they can't serve, there's gays all over the military. It's just that no one wants people to go prancing around the barracks talking about how gay they are.

And before anyone calls me on it, I don't like it when dudes run around bragging about how many chicks theyve banged either, they're both equally annoying.

Let em be gay, just segregate the units. keep the women in one group, men in another, and the fairies in another.

And for FUCK sakes dont let them design the uniforms.

I think a large number of people have missed/overlooked previous posts, and are letting biases cloud their judgement.

Not all gay people act like every day is a freaking pride parade. Not all gay people are huge queens who talk with outrageous lisps and shout how gay they are from rooftops.

In fact, if DADT were repealed, I can almost guarantee gay people in the military wouldn't start prancing around going "heeeyyyyy boyyysss, guesss who looovesss cock!!!!"

The type of big gay queens you are describing (the gay stereotype) and applying to all gay people would most likely never even join the military. You think gay people who are that effeminate and "loud" would even be able to survive boot camp?? lol. Just imagine a queer like Perez Hilton trying to do PT...it's laughable.

No what we are talking about is simple stuff like saying "Oh me and my boyfriend are going here for the holidays." You know, normal stuff that people talk about in conversation...that a gay person serving in the military simply can't say.

Repealing DADT would not magically turn every barracks in the country into Boy's Town or a gay club on South Beach.

These random prejudices, stereotypes, and BASELESS FEARS are the exact reason that DADT still exists. It's ignorant morons who, while not homophobic, think that all gay people just want to tell everyone how gay they are, that are keeping this retarded policy in place.

No, the don't want to prance and have gay parties. THEY JUST DONT WANT TO FUCKING HIDE WHO THEY ARE. How many times does someone have to scream this before someone gets it? Is it that you are so damn bigoted and retarded that you cannot understand a simple desire? Or is it because you simply do not empathize with someone because you feel they are below you? Or perhaps you have NEVER had to hide one iota of yourself because you just happened to be born into a majority rather than a minority and don't give shit?

Pick one. In fact, everyone who is for DADT should pick one and then self-analyze. Why are you such bad people? Seriously.

Yah that's why this thread is so damn funny. It's like people in separate rooms having separate conversations.

People do this in real life debates/conversations, so it doesn't surprise me that it happens on a forum as well.

It's easy to simply shout your opinion over and over, attacking the sources of others and resorting to name-calling when all else fails.

What's hard, is reading others statements...THINKING about them...acknowledging them, and then EXPLAINING why you see things differently.

It's why I find it very hard to argue with anyone who is politically/philosophically extremest (both liberal and conservative). Generally extremism makes people unwilling, or unable, to at least TRY to understand a diverging viewpoint.

This fact is the precise reason politics in America is so fucked, and it's SO DAMN DIFFICULT to get anything done. Everyone just keeps yelling shit louder and louder without ever listening to what the fuck the other person is saying.

God I hate people.

i am going to go on the record as saying: i did not read any of the pages before i jumped into the argument. however, i feel my statements made were far less inflammatory than others and therefore were far less destructive to any actual conversation
