Alright, so my mouse is about 2-3 years old now. The scroll wheel has started acting up resulting in some pretty ugly PvP mishaps. My question is, is there a way I can fix the wheel? I'm pretty sure it just needs to be cleaned or something but I'm not sure how to get inside it. The wheel has some sort of rubber that has possibly expanded on it. It's only like a 5 dollar mouse so it's no real loss I just don't want to have to try and find another "normal" mouse.

Dust gathers beneath the wheel, and repeated motion compresses the dust into a dense mass.

Try scrolling the wheel back and forth and moving the edge of that mass up a bit, so you can grab it with tweezers and pull it out. You might also try using some very fine wire to reach in and pull it out.

Or you could, you know, just buy a new (or used) mouse for $5.

Pop the case open and clean all the hair and shit from around the wheel's axle.

I'll piggyback off this thread:

For my personal laptop I have a Logitech M505. For work, I have a Logitech VX Nano. Both mice have the little USB receiver that plugs into their respective machines. Earlier this week, the M505 stopped working on my laptop. I replaced the battery, updated drivers and plugged the receiver in all four USB ports. Sometimes, the mouse would work for a couple seconds immediately after plugging it in, but then it would die again.

I took the VX Nano and plugged it into my personal laptop. That mouse didn't work, either. I grabbed a wired mouse and plugged it into the laptop and that did work. That tells me it's not an issue with the USB ports, at least.

I figured I'd test all the mice on my work laptop. All three worked flawlessly... even with two receivers plugged in at one, the mice had no problem working at the same time.

What would cause both wireless mice to stop working on only my laptop?

Possible explanation:

Your USB ports have enough power for a simple wired mouse, but don't have enough power for a transceiver. This would explain why it turns on for a second then immediately flickers off.

Try attaching an AC powered hub?

Power settings for USB or your root hub is set to turn off.

So, simply unscrewed my mouse and took it apart (who knew it was that easy) and cleaned it out really good and now it works like a charm.

Had to do basically the same thing when my space bar went (LOL JUMPING!) but had to add a spring for support.

Ty gang!

How would I go about checking the power to the USB - split a USB and take a multimeter to it? I booted into my BIOS and checked to see if there was some way I could change the power settings to different components (because I thought I was able to do something like that in my home computer), but I didn't see anything remotely close.

Also, I checked my device manager and my Root Hub says it's running normally. It says there is 500mA per port and other shit. With the receiver plugged in, it is showing "USB Composite Device Power Required: 98 mA", so my computer see's that I have something plugged in and that it's drawing power. (In power management, I made sure the computer couldn't disable the USB Hub while I diagnose this). Jumping up to 'Mice and other pointing devices', I am now showing a Logitech HID-compliant unifying Mouse, HID compliant mouse and my PS/2 Compatible Mouse (Touchpad)...

Something I noticed - when I push the received in the USB port all the way, the machine doesn't detect the receiver/mouse. When I pull it out a bit, the Device Manager will detect the mice. Even while detected, I still can't use the mouse.

I just plugged all three mice into the machine at once:
The VX Nano and the Microsoft Wired mouse both work. The M505 does not. I'm guessing it's just dead.

Before I buy another $10 mouse, anything else I should try?

Hmm... it looks like the VX Nano is working in the Acer now... and the M505 is working in the HP ProBook. I'm just going to swap receivers then.

Check Windows Power Management, there's a setting to turn USB devices off or not.

@Eturnal
I don't know why, but if I plug my mouse into a specific slot on the back usb slots of my desktop it doesn't get recognized at all but any others will work. This has happened several times with other devices where a certain port suddenly ignores something no matter what but other stuff is recognized. I don't know how I caused it either :x
