I'm not a fan in general about spending money I don't have.
EDIT: All it takes is for you to lose your job and all of a sudden that car, house, and plasma screen that was way above your income level become liabilities.
I have 1 credit card, for the sole purpose of building credit.
I save the money I intend to spend on whatever it may be, and just keep it in my bank account. Pay for the item with the credit card. When the statement comes, pay with my debit card all at once and no harm no foul, instant boost.
The trick is NOT spending money you don't have, only money that you DO have to boost a credit rating.
Credit cards used in any instance other than the above is for emergencies where you find yourself without cash/debit/wallet/help. Few and far between.
