Yes, that's not the least bit smug or condescending, of course those Jesus-freaks are only disagreeing with you because they're "too stupid" to know better.

I'll let you know if we find out.

The same happened to Isaac Newton. They make discoveries, and when they meet a problem that they can't grasp because it's at the frontier of human knowledge, they turn to the divine. They didn't mention anything divine while understanding new knowledge however, and the scientists that come after them do not invoke the divine when they figure out what the previous genius was stuck on.

It's a human thing and it doesn't undermine their genius. Realize that it happened to most of them, with Einstein and Feynman as the most famous exceptions.

Here's an extensive lecture by Neil D. Tyson on this phenomenon, it's a very interesting one:

the problems newton faced were because the religious leaders were also in power and didn't want to lose their power.

Seperation of church and state thank you

Newton also believed in alchemy. Genius isn't perfection.

Also, Leibniz was Newton minus all the fringe stuff.

Newton invoked god when he couldn't mathematically stabilize the star system because it was beyond him at the time, although he could have done it if he didn't come to that conclusion as the solution was easier than some of what he had done.

Before that:

-Laws of optics
-Laws of gravity
-Laws of motion

He took a few months to figure out why the orbits are elliptical, he had to invent differential calculus to figure it out.

Then he turned 26.

Even up until darwin it was bad to go openly against the church. Not as bad as in other countries, but you would still be looked down on.

That strikes me as a somewhat dangerous mentality, I don't know about the rest of you.

A scientist can have faith, but if he's a good scientist he'll admit it isn't based on evidence, or a means to explain the unknown in the physical universe.

And also, reality doesn't give a shit if it hurts your feelings by being smug or condescending.

I'm glad to hear you say that, but I'm pretty sure the person I was responding to was making the point that you had to be stupid not to agree with him. Clearly this is not the case, and I thank you for agreeing.

Since reality isn't the offending party, it has nothing about which to worry in that regard. My "feelings" are inconsequential, but if you refuse to recognize the hypocrisy of deriding people for their beliefs because they're "stupid" while demonstrating that your own are based in error and nonsense just because the hypocrite has by some miracle of fate come to hold an opinion similar enough to your own to make his behavior excusable, then your opinion is as of little consequence as my "feelings."

"Based on error and nonsense."

Um... what?

Science is based on reason and evidence. Faith is based on itself and nothing else. One of these things is more likely based on error and nonsense...

And I'm not the offending party either. You are the offended party, and I was just pointing out that you taking offense does not actually mean that it's wrong.
