actually they've been debating it for decades.

It was hardly a surprise, i just didn't like the way it was implimented. It has nothing to do with the content(some of which i do agree with) or who proposed it (if adolf fucking hitler himself proposed someone give me 75 gold bars for no reason, I'd be just fine with it) or anything else.

If i make point A, don't think I'm a herpderp because you think I don't like point B.

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/20/us/po ... .html?_r=1

I think that article is a fair reflection of his Illinois voting record, and it's not like he was abusing the 'present' vote there. However, when he came to the US Senate, if the source I'm using is right and I can count (and my counting is a lot less reliable than internet sources), in the Senate he voted:
Present/Not Voting: 162 times--42.63%
Yes: 162 times--42.63%
No: 56 times--14.74%

Being "present" isn't leading. The budget he dropped the other day was basically just another "present" vote.

Unlike some people, I don't want the President to "fail." If he fucks up, it hoses all of us (see Hindsight: 2000-2008). He is arguably in the worst spot of any US President since Reagan. It is an opportunity for greatness, but I don't see him grasping his moment. He could easily propose the sort of cuts in our budget that really need to be made, even if some of those cuts were so minor as to be symbolic, pick up republican support, claim bi-partisanship, and come out looking like a champ. He's not doing that. He's even got republicans on the hill in a spot where they're discussing cuts to their babies, like the military and intelligence. The world is his fucking oyster, what is he doing?

Jubber

They were trying to be bi-partisan early on, all it did was make them look like a bunch of pussies.

Current political leaders are too polarizing to have any bipartisanship. For one, neither side was willing to budge during the first two years of this administration and both sides (well, most people on each side) weren't willing to compromise. Another thing that halts bipartisanship is the rhetoric each side throws around. No one can expect the Republicans to play fair when democrats were talking shit (Nazi name-calling and the like) right before the Republicans took control earlier this year. Also, a bipartisan process wouldn't have locked doors for debate between parties... kinda like when the Democrats wouldn't let the Republicans come to the table during the health care debate. (Don't even bring up the PR horse-and-pony show Obama threw together when he and the Democrats came under fire for not working with the Republicans.)

In two years time, when the Democrats are screaming for Bipartisanship, I hope whichever Republican takes office says, "I Won"... because that's how you really lead a bipartisan government.

Do we live on the same planet? I distinctly remember Obama chucking the public option to garner republican votes (and iirc he got none).

Obama spent the first two years of his administration giving up pretty much everything to get republican votes to no avail.

The health care bill they passed is almost entirely Bob Dole's healthcare bill from the 90s. Most of the now most controversial aspects (ie - individual mandate) were submitted by republicans.

Basically, republicans who hate on Obama for not being bipartisan do have a point. He has been passing a lot of republican legislation, to the chagrin of progressives. But by all means, keep bitching because it makes it apparent who doesn't know wtf they're talking about.

Strange. I read it was because he was dealing with some lobbyists... and I also heard the President said the Public Option wasn't really important after running his campaign on that. Whatever he can do to save face, I guess.
