I really like being from a Pennsylvania Dutch area. It's Fastnacht day!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fasnacht_%28pastry%29

They're very good if you get them fresh and even better home-made. Grocery stores usually just slap a different name on their donuts :/ Anyone else have them in their area?

I attended a Mennonite church when I was growing up, and I find it weird that an Anabaptist sect observes anything related to Lenten tradition. Then again, the Amish are huge on tradition, and if it's something that got carried over from earlier generations, they'll never give it up. Next time I talk to the gentleman that led our services, I'll have to ask him about these. He was raised Amish, but his family picked up stakes and moved during the dust-bowl era, and settled in Harrisonburg, VA, because there was work to be had and because there is a relationship between the Amish and Mennonites due to the similarity of their beliefs, and his family had contacts there.

There were way, way more Germans that moved to this area than there were Amish. Pennsylvania was amazingly diverse in the number of religious sects and branches it housed. There were also a lot of Germans that moved here for no particular religious reasons, it just became a settling point for many of the immigrants. Fastnachts are a Pennsylvania Dutch tradition, but may have nothing to do with the Amish (I've never seen an Amish selling a Fastnacht, but that doesn't mean anything).

Looks similar to a berliner, or an Askenazi Jewish jelly donut. I enjoyed those growing up, provided, like you say, you get real, fresh donuts, not just mass-produced emulsified stuff.

That's true, but if you say "Pennsylvania Dutch," most people are going to think "Amish." Then again, most people don't realize the "DUTCH" is a mispronunciation of "DEUTSCH." Most people, as they say, are idiots...it's what we all have in common as human beings!

I'm one of those idiots that thought Penn. Dutch were Amish... and I never realized Dutch was a mispronunciation of DEUTSCH.

My understanding was/is that Deutsch is what the Germans call themselves and their language, and Dutch refers to the culture of the people from the Netherlands and their language which is somewhere between French and German.

I'm pretty sure that Dutch, German, Danish, English and the scandinavian languages all come from the same root just like how Italian, French, and Spanish all come from latin.

I can speak a decent chunk of German and when I went to Amsterdam, I could read signs and menus and stuff.

PS: Dutch is one of the silliest languages on the planet.

Deutsch was (and is) what the Germans call themselves. Americans being Americans, we just got lazy when referring to them in this area and as time passed the Pennsylvania Deutsch became the Pennsylvania Dutch. Over generations people saw themselves a part of that community and not of a German community. There are a lot of colloquialisms in use around here that are passed down german words, Pennsylvania Dutch being it's own dialect. I haven't asked an Amish person, but they may refer to themselves as Deutsch.

Correct.

English, German, Swedish, etc are Germanic.
Spanish, French, Italian (plus one more I think) are Romantic.
